Outland Hostel offers a very different type of choice in the party town of Vang Vieng; it sets out to cater to the needs of people who arrive in the area with the wish to go hiking and enjoy the outdoors. The family-run hostel is really basic though and the bare-bones dorm room is definitely not to everybody’s liking!
Outland Hostel prefers to set itself apart from the trendy party hostels of Vang Vieng, and this is reflected in the choice of its location as well. It is situated in the south of the town on a quiet residential street, close to the entry to the national park. While there is not much in its close vicinity, you can still walk everywhere in the town as it is not too big, though it will take you a bit longer. Also, around the hostel, you will find some authentic street food stalls that sell food at lower prices than you'll find in the centre.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers one big dorm and a few smaller private rooms. The dorm has individual beds scattered around on the top floor in no particular order and it has a few enclosed areas that offer slightly more privacy. The whole place is extremely basic and without style. For decoration, you have a few old hiking maps on the walls but not much else. The bathrooms -- which are basic and not too clean -- are on the bottom floor and you share them with the family who lives here.
The best place to socialise is in the little garden patio in front of the hostel. You can see that this area was given a lot of care and attention when the hostel opened, but today everything in it has faded and feels slightly old. The wooden furniture still has some charm to it though, and it is a nice place to sit and watch people going by in the street. There is a fully equipped kitchen in the hostel, and if you ask the owner, he will surely let you use it.
People coming here are normally ones who detest the party scene but still want to spend time in Vang Vieng to explore all its natural wonders. They pay a rather high price though -- this hostel is way too simple and rundown for the cost, and if you don’t mind something a bit more lively, you will surely find something better!
