The Hostelz.com Review - Genuine, independent review you can trust.
Tony Central Hostel offers the bare minimum a hostel could -- old, ugly, rundown and unattractive are the best adjectives to describe it. However, it is located right in the centre and you get a nice free breakfast in the mornings.
The Location
The hostel could not be in a better place -- housed by a Colonial-type house right in the heart of the UNESCO quarters, it is located in a strategic position for exploring all that the town has to offer. If you step outside of the hostel in the evening, you will find yourself in the middle of the night market and it will only take you five minutes to walk to the National Palace and the start of the Phu-Si hill hike and another five minutes to walk down to the Mekong River. Despite its central location, it manages to stay really quiet so a good night's sleep is guaranteed.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel only has two rooms, both of which are dorms. The beds are basically half bunks -- they used to be bunks, but they were separated and now they serve as individual beds. The rooms are ugly, rather dusty, and haphazardly furnished. However, they are equipped with an air conditioner, which can be quite pleasant in the heat. A balcony belongs to them, from where you can watch life unfolding on the main street. The bathrooms are on the other end of the corridor and are equally unattractive.
Common Spaces
The hostel operates as a travel agency as well and the office is on the ground floor. It has really competitive prices, their motorbike rental is one of the cheapest around town. However, this is also the only area where it would be possible to chill and socialise. There are a few dining tables here, as this is the area where the free breakfast is served in the mornings, which is either an egg dish or a noddle soup dish. However, even though on its booking platforms the hostel promises a shared kitchen, the owner charges almost the price of a full night's stay for the use of it.
Summary
Tony Central Hostel can be an ok choice if all you need is a place to sleep, and as a bonus, you'll appreciate a yummy free breakfast. However, do not expect any kind of comfort or luxury here and do not be surprised if certain things don't work, the Wi-Fi is weak, and the owner is grumpy.
