Beijing Red Lantern Hostel Reviews

Great value and very clean

nice people. the mattresses are a bit firm but the price is right and I'd rather compromise on that than cleanliness. Good stuff.

Top quality!

we stayed for five nights in a double room with shared bathroom at the 2F around the central courtyard. clean hostel, very much alive with friendly people of all ages living there too, good kitchen and the best location for an evening walk around the hutongs. we were offered free breakfast during our stay because we had booked for five nights. this came as a very nice surprise for us -- every morning a different dish with toast, eggs, fruit and orange juice, as we like it best. although almost everyone speaks more than enough english to run the business, we encountered one miscommunication regarding the coffee to go with our 'free' breakfast. after a little discussion the argument was settled without further inconvenience. when we checked-out, we received souvenirs from their gift shop. another sign of the fantastic hospitality in this family-run hostel.

Loved it!!

Just recently came home from China and spent our last 4 days at the red lantern house (west yard). We first arrived and dropped our baggage off, checked in then told we were staying at the west yard about a 5 min walk away. We had our bags put on the back of a bike and walked down. Not sure what to expect but when we got there and got our en-suite rooms we were very wrapped. Our 2 boys had a separate room from us not very close but the safety we felt there was great. It was like a home away from home. The atmosphere was great and some of the staff spoke english and were very friendly and helpful. There was an indoor and outdoor courtyard which was very cosy. It was great too because many english speaking people were there from all over the country. The food they offer was also some of the best we tried in China. Try it you will love it!!

Warmly recommended!

This hostel is the most friendliest hostel I have ever been. It's charming and the rooms are very comfortable. I have been there several times and both yards are absolutely worth staying there! I would never choose another place in Beijing!

I found my second home at Red Lantern House, Beijing

Thanks to the wonderful, friendly, and helpful staff of Red Lantern House (especially William, Simon, Kane and Lisa), me and my wife preserve beautiful memories of Beijing. The place breathes with history and exotic atmosphere. The crew is constantly smiling and tries hard to make the guests feel well. The rooms are clean and warm, the food is excellent and trips (to Great Wall at Mutianyu or to a circus performance) match the description. That's why I did not hesitate to book the same place for my parents who just left for their Asian trip. if I'll ever find my way to Beijong again, Red Lantern House it will be!

One of the best hostels i've been in China. looks very nice and the people who work there are so cool. the area is not very bad. the hostel is located in a Hutong and right next is a cool shopping street.

Absolutely fantastic hostel. Has a beautifully courtyard with a restaurant. Rooms are clean and comfy. A bit hard to find as the dairy queen place mark that they use as a guide to find it is no longer there. If you want something chinesey without the dirt then this place is great. The food at the restaurant is cheep and very good. Even the coffee is not bad, which is amazing for a Chinese place.

Fine place to stay right in the middle of old Beijing. Quite close to most of the major attractions (not a walking distance though). The staff is very helpful and friendly and speak some English. If something is not cleaned or changed at the time desired, one can just ask. Everything that a budget traveler might ever need in there in one place -- small trips, books, Internet. Yes, one must lose some of the comforts offered by the bigger hotels, but then why stay there in this case. Bigger hotels are the same everywhere, but Red Lantern House is quite unique.

Had an absolutely fabulous stay here. The hostel was quirky and looked very traditional and authentic. The staff were very attentive and spoke reasonable English. They were helpful in booking tickets, suggesting restaurants and providing food/drinks. Bedrooms were clean and warm and the shared bathroom facilities were the best we had stayed in for the full two weeks in China. Highly recommended

Liked: Once there, a nice clean hostel with a good vibe and friendly staff. Make sure to check out the huge $1 beer and sweet house cats. Didn't like: he instructions really need to be fixed. There is no such thing as shuttle bus line 2 and I know this because I was a lonely lost foreigner asking about a non exsistant shuttle bus. When I called the reception (rip $$ I dont have a local sim) he just said subway. If its just subway (express train) maybe you should write that??! Another thing that worries me is the lack of internal locks? I was a bit worried about a forward American man and the fact I couldnt lock my dorm room scared me a bit.

Liked: Staff was friendly and nice setting. Didn't like: Nothing really.

Liked: We stayed 4 days, people and staff were really nice, location was very good, dcoration is a success, you really arrive in a chinese environment. Didn't like: This Hostel is perfect until you have n problem with them. In fact this Hostel is a business and only a business. If the staff seems so helpful, that is only to make you pay for the services. We paid for a trip to the great wall, we spent 3 hours in a car, and when we arrived the driver announced us that the visit was cancelled because of a marathon. We had to spend again 3 hours to go back to the Hostel and to do that again the day after. We were really angry because the y should have vrified before, but they never accept to recognyze that it was their fault. Even if they sell the service, they said that we had to verify before, that it is not their problem. We had to pay one more night to return to the grt wall the day after. They were winner in this situation and they did not care with the fact that we had to wake up at 6:00 two Times, that we had to spend 6 hours in a car and that we had to pay one more night. We asked the staff to call by phone the boss: he has been very condescendant, very comptentuous and desagreable. They did not accept to let us sleep the more night free.

Liked: Nice communal area with fish and pond: very restful Didn't like: 15 min walk from nearest metro

Liked: The courtyard area is really pretty and the staff was (mostly) really nice. Didn't like: No lockers in the rooms. One of the younger receptionist girls was rude and clearly bothered whenever I asked her a question. They didn't clean the dorm much after people checked out; the floor was dirty and covered in hair. The most annoying thing was that there is no rule for people to be out of the courtyard/be quiet after a certain hour, so every night people were socializing and drinking literally right outside our door until as late as 2am.

Liked: The staff are wonderful, went beyond their duties and helped me with some photos of the Great Wall. Charming place, a home away from home. If im ever back in Beijing this is the place I will stay. Didn't like: Nothing to dislike

Liked: Yery friendly and helpful staff! Excellent location close to Tube. I would come back and I will! Didn't like: Nice terrace, but because of some fish-bassins a lot of mosquitos

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay at Red Lantern House. Everyone here is very helpful, the food is excellent and it is kept very clean. You can't get a better location as well. The surrounding hutongs are a must for daily exploring and eating. The subway system is close by and very easy to use. Didn't like: Althought the food was fantastic we found it a bit pricier than in the surrounding hutongs. You can get a whole breakfast for 28 RMB but a coffee is 20 RMB. However, you can get hot water for free so bring some tea or instant coffee perhaps if you would like a free hot beverage in the morning.

Liked: Red Lantern House had a lot of character and charm. Upon arrival, we were greeted with the warm smiles of the staff. They were very helpful with respect to navigating the city and suggesting hours and locations. The design and decor of the Red Lantern House is very unique -- a proper Chinese feel! Didn't like: The website mislead us to believe that we received towels at the accommodation, however they did have towels for rent. We also had hoped to cook in the advertised kitchen, however they meant that there was a restaurant available and not that a kitchen would be available to guests to cook.

Liked: Amazing staff! Very friendly and they speak English very well! Didn't like: The shower area could be cleaner.

Experience the real core life of Beijing and stay in our Beijing traditional courtyard house within your budget. In the sense of home, Red lantern House is the closest while you are traveling.

Behind the busy streets of Central Beijing, Red Lantern House is quietly located in the best part of the largest preserved Hutong area of downtown Beijing, which used to be the homes of royal and noble families.

Our staff is friendly and can speak English, always ready for help.

All our lovely bedrooms are clean and of a fantastic value. Again as another guests wrote in his review of our hostel: 'The character is outstanding and charming. When you first pull up you may be a bit confused because the area doesn't look the best. However, you soon realize this cute little place is in the centre of a real old Beijing downtown.
