Backpackers at 1770 Reviews

1770 Backpackers is an amazing place to stay in Agnes Water - the perfect stop between Hervey Bay and Airlie Beach. The best part of this hostel, besides the good facilities, is their free offers -- surf lessons and an amazing everyday BBQ.

The Location

This hostel is really well located -- it's in the center. Because of its location, you will find easy access to shops, cafes, and a small supermarket (if you're on a low budget it's better to buy your groceries before, as this supermarket is a little bit expensive). The stop of the main bus (Greyhound) is a five-minute walk away, but this hostel offers a free pickup.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This hostel offers dorms and double rooms, with good value for money. There is something special about this hostel -- they don't give you a key, so there is no need for a key deposit (and it's probably the quickest check-in ever), but the place is really safe, so no worries about that. The rooms are big, with comfortable bunk beds; the hostel provides free linen and a blanket (you need to make your own bed). You will have a lot of free space to put your luggage.

The bathroom is located inside the room and the toilet and shower are separated, so if you need to use the toilet, you don't have to wait if someone is taking a shower. The bathroom and room are really clean -- despite being in a beach area, you don't see sand spread around. The only thing that could be better are the hooks in the shower for you to keep your stuff, because at the moment there are none.

Common Spaces

The common spaces are really good, with a huge kitchen that has all the main utensils that you need, a nice BBQ area outside (for free use), a lot of tables for you to sit down, and a really nice and big TV room with free DVD hire (only available from 6 p.m.). After checkout, you can keep your luggage in the hostel and use all the facilities for a small fee. This hostel doesn't have a laundry, because the public one is ten meters' distance, but there is a place where you can dry your clothes for free. In the reception, you can borrow Australian guides for free, perfect for you to plan your visit and your next stops.

At night they offer an amazing dinner, a BBQ with hamburgers, sausages, bread, and salad. The dinner is really well served (one hamburger and one sausage for each person), so in the end you will be full. If you are vegetarian, they will prepare a special meal for you.

The surf lessons happen daily in the morning and are free, you only need to rent the surfboard. The lesson is really complete - you learn everything about rips, water safety and how to stand on the board. After, you will go to the ocean to put the theory into practice - expect a lot of fun. The groups in the lessons are small, and most of times there are three instructors with you in the water, so it's like you're having private lessons - this is a really good class, and for free!

For all of this, this is one excellent place to stay in Agnes Water. This hostel has a great quality/price ratio, perfect for your vacation.

Response from the accommodation:

While positive, this review is full of inaccuracies for what the hostel is today: We do not offer free BBQ or Free surf lessons. We do take a key deposit and certainly give keys out. no longer have dvd hire. after checkout guests can use our facilities for free. we do have a laundry, $4 per wash and $4 per dry. we don't offer the BBQ dinner anymore, though we do offer $5 vegetarian dishes each night. no free surf lessons.

Good place, great beach.

Good backpackers, large dorms with good clean bathrooms, no locks on any doors though -- not sure what the deal is there -- and not enough clothesline. The owner is a bit of a control freak. Top beach for swimming, running, or surfing (when surf is on), relaxing town.

I came here after staying somewhere else and what a difference this place had made to my stay. 1770 Backpackers may not be as big or new as others but I tell you what, the staff here are the best I have seen since being in Australia. It is a home away from home, charming in style, located in the heart of town and very close to the beach. You are not a number or a $ sign here, these people care about you and make sure you get the most out of your money. Every activity is AWESOME: Kayaking in 1770 was beautiful and refreshing, Thundercat surf race boat is total adrenaline, Scooteroo tour is amazing, the surf lessons are only $16.50 and the flights was unbelievable. I did all of the above and still have loads of cash to do the rest of the East Coast. I have just got back from my sailing trip with New Horizon which was organised for me at a cheap price because I booked it through 1770 Backpackers and it was brilliant. Take my advice and stay at the best hostel ever!!!!

Fantastic place, one of the best hostels, I've stayed in during my time in Oz! Everything is small and sweet and charming and the staff are just wonderful. Nothing to complain about, what more to say?

This is a small, friendly backpackers with great bathrooms and kitchen. The dorms are clean and there is a nice outdoor area with hammocks. I've found all the staff here to be friendly! There is a lot to do in 1770 for such a small place so book more than two nights!

This hostel was amazing. My mate and I got stuck in the small town of 1770 for Christmas 2004 and thought it was going to be a bust, we ended up being totally taken in by the owners and treated like their own children/friends. We were made food for Christmas dinner, bought Christmas treats and beer! tanned nude on the deserted beaches on Christmas Eve Day --amazing. Our friends came up in their car to visit and were completely welcomed into their family as well. These people were amazing to us. The place was gorgeous. the jacuzzi -- i mean, seriously guys, 16 a night and you get a Jacuzzi, pool, awesome kitchen fully stocked -- an oven! You backpackers know how big of a treat this is! and a gorgeous view. Tons to do. Loved it.

This hostel was OK, if a bit bare. The staff were great to me, really friendly. The only reason it didn't get 4 stars is because the layout was weird. Our double room was accessed through a dorm and, although it was quiet, the wall between the rooms only extended about 8 feet off the ground. (There was a big gap between the wall and ceiling, so it was a bit difficult to get privacy... if you know what I mean!)

Response from the accommodation:

Under new management - we no longer have double rooms. Our 10 bed dorms are very spacious and the walls are from ceiling to floor with a private ensuite.

I think that this place has one of the best atmospheres in Oz, although I really think that D*CK, a.k.a. Richard, should sit down and shut up and just relax. But besides that, it's cool.

Response from the accommodation:

Under new (friendly) management as of July 2013 :)
