Earth Hostel Reviews

Earth Hostel is small, bright, fresh, open air riad with a lovely rooftop with lots of plants. With complimentary breakfast included, and cooking classes offered, Earth Hostel is truly an oasis in Marrakech.

The Location

The hostel is a bit difficult to find, as it is down several windy streets and pretty deep into the Medina. The streets leading to the hostel are dark and often deserted, so you may want to avoid coming back late at night. There is signage along the way, though you must be vigilant to spot it amongst the chaos. The hostel is also down the street from a little "cat house" where you are sure to find the cutest little stray cats roaming around.

Other than that, it is far enough back to offer a peaceful respite from the chaos of the Medina, yet central enough to make sightseeing easy.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Because Earth Hostel is a fairly small riad, the dorms are quite small. They are clean with fresh linens but no storage. The hostel offers small lockers for valuables, located in the common areas. You provide your own lock. The rooms get nice and dark at night which makes for deep sleep. Each bed has a power outlet -- no light and no shelf.

There is one shower room with two showers. The showers are very deep with hooks for your clothes and a little ledge for toiletries. The water is nice and hot. These showers are light and spacious and some of the best we've seen in hostels anywhere. The room itself has a hair dryer and a large mirror. You can get ready in front of the mirror while others use the showers. The showers both have doors that lock.

We noticed one toilet room with two stalls, a sink for both, plus one separate WC. Unless you are showering early in the morning for a tour, there isn't a wait for the bathroom or shower. Everything is bright, well-stocked, and clean.

Common Spaces

On the ground floor of the riad is a little common area with pillows and low tables. This room gets lit up from above. It is absolutely stunning. The free Wi-Fi works best in this area, but is generally not so good. Wi-Fi is sufficient for web browsing and for watching low-quality videos.

There is luggage storage available before and after check-in. Towels are not included in the price, but breakfast is. Breakfast -- consisting of tea, juice, coffee (real, spiced Moroccan coffee), msemen (flatbread), pancake, muffin, boiled egg, and jam -- is thorough.

Upstairs, the roof is spacious, with a few areas to sit and lounge. Wi-Fi does not really work up there, but it is a wonderful place to sit and relax. Breakfast is served up there as well. There are lots of plants and flowers making it feel like a sanctuary. In the mornings, all you hear are the birds chirping and roosters crowing in the distance. When you are up there, you forget you are in the middle of the madness that is Marrakech.

This is an excellent hostel. The showers, although unisex, are well-designed, clean, and well-maintained. The riad is much smaller than pictured, but it is every bit as beautiful, perhaps moreso. There is even a full-length mirror near the entry for examining yourself in your new Moroccan digs before leaving. This is a really great place. The only thing they could improve is Wi-Fi. We would stay there forever if their Wi-Fi situation improved.

Location and Contact

• Once you arrive to the main square (Jemaa el-Fna), find Cafe de France on the right-hand side. With the cafe on your right, continue straight. You will pass Cafe Montreal on your right. Continue straight into the market (Souk el Kessabine).
• Take a left down the street to the Berber Market (sign above). Follow the road straight and around to the right and then left.
• Continue straight and you will pass a small, open square to your left. Do not enter towards the square - keep to the right and continue on straight for a few meters. Look up and to the right and go right down Derb Ennakhel (small black sign above the arch). Continue straight down the ally that bends to the right until you reach house number 36 on the left side.
