Manizales is a beautiful up-and-coming tourist destination in the Colombian coffee zone, which is home to many new hostels opening up, including Golden Frog Mountain Hostel, which opened within a year of our stay. It's a really big, brand new hostel; with very nice facilities; and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff crew.
The Location
The hostel is located in the centre of Manizales, a short cable car ride from the main bus terminal. You will find plenty of shops and restaurants around. It is also very safe to walk around and rather quiet after 9 p.m. during the week. The main attraction, the church, is two blocks away, as are a really good panaderia (bakery) and supermarket. From where the cable car drops you off, you either walk ten blocks or you take an inexpensive taxi ride.
The hostel itself is located on the third floor of the building. To enter, you will walk through a shoe shop. Look out for a big, black sign on your right saying "Golden Frog Hostel" on the corner of Twenty-two and Nineteen. Most bars and clubs are in the Zona Rosa, close to the university, which is only a short taxi ride away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel building itself is really big and the dorms are spacious, ranging between two and four beds, as well as mixed and female dorms. At least one four-bed dorm has four very large single beds as opposed to regular bunk beds. One four-bed dorm has two bunk beds. All beds are numbered and have a matching locker that fits a big backpack and comes with a lock and key. There are six bathrooms throughout the entire building, all including toilet and showers as well as five sinks. There is always fresh soap and the bathrooms are very clean. The shower takes around four minutes to heat up, but there is hot water. They also provide big buckets for the cold water and use it later to clean/water the plants. The water pressure varies and there is a nice rug in front of the shower.
Most dorms face the street, which can be a bit loud during the day when the windows are open, but isn't a problem after 8. Beds are comfortable, you get a sheet plus a really comfy fleece blanket. You will walk around twenty meters between your dorm and one of the bathrooms. The dorms are located right next to the common area, so it can be loud at night. Since this is not a party hostel and people are rarely loud after 10 or 11, it is not too big of a problem.
Common Spaces
There are two main common areas -- the first one is the first thing you see when you come in. You'll find the reception, three big sofas, a couch, table, a big TV with Netflix, and a very large eating area with many plants. The second common area is at the back of the hostel and offers another TV and a couple of sofas as well as three hammocks. There is a big and very well-equipped kitchen, sharp knives, and good pots and pans. Breakfast is good and included in the price (eggs, bread, cheese, fruit juice, coffee/tea) and served with love by the nicest staff ever.
Summary
All in all, this is a great and modern hostel. It is located in the centre of town and offers big dorms and comfy beds. Every member of staff goes out of their way to please you and makes you feel like home. It is still pretty new, and Manizales is becoming more and more popular.

Events: Golden Frog Hostels reserves its spaces for holding special events, meetings and workshops. Meetings or parties with people who are not staying at the hostel are not allowed without prior authorization from the management.
Biosecurity: Once at the entrance to our Hostel, the guest will find information alluding to our biosecurity protocols. We have a biosecurity filter using glycerinated alcohol, quaternary ammonium to clean shoes, clothes, luggage, bags and items that are required during entry to GOLDEN FROG HOSTELS. We have informative signs in visible common areas and QR codes about the correct use of PPE, emergency numbers, precautionary measures, protection and responses to the spread of COVID-19.
As part of the biosafety protocols, guests must complete the Covid19 symptomatology survey and their temperature will be taken before continuing to check in. • From the bus Station:
• If you just arrive from any place in the country by bus, you have the opportunity of take the cable car just a couple of meters away from the place where the bus drop you off for a little cost of COP 1800 (US 0,62) and climb to the downtown of Manizales. As soon as you go out of the Cable Station, take a left (heading west) and walk 10 blocks straight towards the street 20th (Calle 20), then turn to the right one block to the Carrera 22nd (Carrera 22), in the corner turn once more to the left and walk for 30 meters. You must find in the right side of the street a grey and blue building with the name of “Centro Comercial La 22†and at the end of the building you will see the entry where you must go up stairs to the third floor.
• From the Airport:
• Taxi: Taxi is the easiest and fastest way to go downtown, give the driver the address and make sure he turns on the taximeter, there will be an overcharge for airport, the average cost of the Taxi is around COP 20.000 (USD 7).
• BUS: If you want to take a bus, you must exit the airport property and walk down about 800 meters to the National University. There you just have to wait for a bus that has a sign to downtown (el centro. Tell the driver you need to drop off at Los Agustinos Church (Iglesia Los Agustinos), you will find a pedestrian cross sign with a light there, cross the avenue and keep walking up (South Direction) towards the Carrera 22nd, then you will be at the corner of the big building of the majors office, turn to the left to the 19th street and You must find in the right side of the street a grey and blue building with the name of “Centro Comercial La 22†and at the end of the building you will see the entry where you must go up stairs to the third floor.
