Grand Hostel Manin is a great budget option for anyone wanting to explore the beautiful area of Cinque Terre as well as the city of La Spezia.

The Location

The hostel is located in the city of La Spezia, which is a port city south of the five towns of Cinque Terre. The hostel is about a fifteen-minute walk from the train station through a mainly pedestrian area, which has many restaurants and shops. A supermarket is also located just around the corner. The hostel is on the first floor of a plain-looking apartment building, so you need to look closely for the sign (it was a little hard for us to find). The hostel staff provide a very detailed map that they have created with many recommendations on it for La Spezia and how to visit Cinque Terre, which is very handy to use.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel is divided up into two sections with some rooms on a different floor to the main common room and kitchen. You can stay in a four-, six-, or eight-bed dorm where each bed has its own locker as well as individual power points, shelf, and reading light.

Bathrooms differ between the two floors, with large, gender-separated bathrooms with individual toilets and showers on the main floor, which are more practical for a large volume of users. Whereas if you are on the smaller floor, you have only two bathrooms available, which means you often have to wait to use them due to the impractical layout of having a toilet kind of separate. However, the shower with its unlockable inward-swinging door means you have to lock the whole bathroom anyway if you want privacy. Also, the toilet paper situation is often lacking, which requires a trip to reception. One of the four-bed dorms also has an en suite bathroom. The hostel is relatively new, though, and looks very modern; cleaning is generally pretty good.

Common Spaces

The hostel has common areas on both floors of the hostel. A well-equipped kitchen is provided on the main floor, which is the main hang-out spot for guests of the hostel. A small lounge area is also found in front of reception. If you stay on the other floor, then you have access to another small lounge area with a couch and table. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel and a free, decent breakfast is also provided, but the hours could start a little earlier for keen hikers wanting to get out to Cinque Terre earlier. Luggage storage is provided, but it is not the most secure way to leave your luggage. As this hostel is mainly used by people wanting to explore Cinque Terre, you do get a mix of guests from the young to the older, but it's a great place to chat with friendly, like-minded people about what you should visit.

Overall this is a great budget option from which to explore Cinque Terre, with good facilities and a friendly atmosphere right in the heart of La Spezia.

Location

• From Pisa airport: Take the train/ bus to Pisa Centrale, from there change to La spezia Centrale
• From Train station 'La Spezia Centrale': after passing the traffic cirlce, take 'via del Prione', the main pedestrian street and walk until the end, where it crosses 'Via Chiodo'. Turn left and walk along via chiodo for a block then turn left at Via Daniele Manin, we are at number 8 just right after the pharmacy (along via Daniele Manin) you find us at the 2nd floor.
• From Highway A15: take the exit 'La Spezia', then take Via GiosuÃƒÂ¨ Carducci and onceit crosses 'Viale Italia' turn left. Go straight for a couple of km and turn right in 'Via Alessandro Malaspina', then right again in 'Via Domenico Chiodo'. Destination is after 250 m on left side in a pedestrian street( via Daniele Manin). we are at number 8, just beside the pharmacy.
