The Magic Sponge Reviews

Our first impression of The Magic Sponge is that it's a home away from home; it's a place where you can go explore Kampot and the surrounding areas and return to a comfortable place with a relaxed atmosphere, a good meal, and a drink.

The Location

The hostel is on a quiet street, away from the hustle and bustle of the riverfront. Although, that being said, it's a quick, five-minute walk to the riverfront and busy part of town. Everything in this town is within walking distance, but it is also possible to rent a tuk-tuk, of which there are plenty to be found. It's an old building with a lovely spiral staircase up to the top floor. The building is well maintained and super clean.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Our five-bed dorm room is up a spiral staircase, on the second floor. There is no door; as you come up the stairs, the whole floor is dedicated to the dorm room. The beds are a bit close together, but there is space to slide luggage under the bed, leaving the floor space clear of clutter. A large metal locker is allocated to each bed; although it's fairly large, it's too narrow for a backpack. There are many windows on the one wall and the far side of the room leads onto a terrace. There is no door on this wall, so there is a constant cool breeze blowing in through the room. There is no air conditioner, since the terrace side is open plan. The room has two large ceiling fans, and above each bed is a smaller personal fan and mosquito net. Each bed is equipped with a reading light, electric socket, sheet, blanket, and towel. The mattresses and pillows are both very comfortable. From the terrace we have a partial view of the stunning sunsets -- the terrace is very comfortable with enough seating for everyone in the room. There are unfortunately no electric sockets on the terrace, which is a pity as it's a lovely space to sit and work.

The bathroom is en suite and consists of one hot-water rain shower, one toilet, and one hand basin. It's a modern bathroom with rough, imitation-pebble tiles. We love these type of tiles, as they do not become slippery when wet or soapy. On the one wall is a towel rail and many hooks for clothes or towel. There is also a shelf for soap/shampoo. The bathroom is well equipped with all the necessary things to enable comfort for a guest. The dorm room is comfortable, clean, and well maintained.

Common Spaces

As you come through the front entrance of the property, you walk past a mini-golf course to the one side and a large undercover restaurant area on the other side. Then it's up a couple of stairs onto a veranda with tables and chairs. Next it's in through the doors into the reception/bar area. This area has the usual bar setup, as well as a couple of tables and chairs. There are multiple electric sockets on this ground floor area, where it's possible to sit and work and charge mobiles. The whole area is clean and comfortable. The staff are amazing and ready to help with any query. The restaurant has a diverse menu and the food is delicious.

The hostel offers Open Mic Night on Wednesdays, Quiz Night on Fridays, and various other entertainment for guests. They close down the events before midnight, so as not to disturb the guests wanting to sleep. During the day, there is either nice background music playing or a DVD on a large flat-screen TV. When we arrived, we didn't get further than the reception, as we ended up sitting there watching a movie and drinking a beer before going up to our room. The Wi-Fi is super strong throughout the hostel. It doesn't feel like a hostel at all, but rather like a home away from home.

On the first floor of the building is a large lounge area with large, black-leather sofas and a big flat-screen TV. There is also a little library. This area opens up onto a terrace with more seating. There are plenty of common areas in this hostel. It's a fantastic social place for solo and couple travelers, as well as families.

We highly recommend this hostel as great value for money. It's such a comfortable place with a friendly and happy atmosphere ... and don't forget the delicious food!
