Alur Hostel Tallinn Old Town Reviews

There is good and bad

Good --- Location. Friendly staff. Kitchen (well equipped for self-cooking). Beds (even if not new, we slept pretty well). Bad -- Noisy (thin walls and poorly educated guests). Showers (no pressure, often cold, often messy [but for this point no need to complain about the people from the hostel who cleaned the common rooms several times a day. Some people should just learn how to shower]).

ALUR Hostel Tallinn Old Town, this bright, modern hostel, is housed in a modernised old building and as a result, you have the best of both worlds - some quirky features combined with modern facilities. Entrance is by door buzzer and reception is on the first floor, so it's straight up the stairs when you arrive. The reception area is tiny; squeeze in more than two backpackers with rucksacks and you'll be falling over each others' legs and luggage.

We hadn't booked and wanted a double for three nights and they offered us a room on the top floor -- basically in the eaves -- for the first night, after which there would be a better room on the first floor for the other two nights (they would allow us to leave our backpacks in reception the next morning, and they would put the bags in the new room when it was ready).

The Location

The hostel is situated, as the name suggests, in Vana Tallinn -- Old Tallinn; well, just about, as it's within the old walls and is two minutes' walk from the main square, Raekoja Plats. There are one or two hostels nearer the centre, but it's nothing worth quibbling over. The hostel's sign is rather modest and, as it has no windows at eye level, you could easily miss it. We had arrived in town by ferry from Helsinki and walked to the Old Town -- it took about fifteen minutes with our rucksacks. The central bus station is a tram ride away, but the stop to catch it is nearby.

If you do wish to buy food to eat at the hostel, there is a small deli/gastronom in the Russian style just on the next corner. They sell some delicious, sliced, cured meats and excellent cheeses as well as fresh bread and other grocery items. They sell alcohol until mid-evening.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The top floor room is one not normally in use except for occasionally acting as a store room. There is nothing wrong with it really, although it is more basic than the room we later stayed in. There is a double bed, but no hanging space and no table. It didn't bother us; we intended to be out most of the time anyway and we would happily have stayed in that room had we been able. The only downside is that although there is a toilet on that floor, there is no shower, and the next morning we had to go downstairs to the floor below for a shower. This is hardly a hardship, though.

Our other room, a double with two single beds, also has a desk and a coat rack for hanging clothes. It is still very sparse, but the nice, new laminate floor and the soft furnishings make it look less basic. On this floor, there are two showers and two toilets near the room; we think there are more on another part of this floor. The private rooms and dorms are on the same floor. There's always lots of noise coming from the dorms, so it would appear that this is quite a noisy hostel, popular with groups.

Common Spaces

ALUR is not a hostel brimming with facilities. However, guests can access the internet using the laptop in reception for up to twenty minutes a day. If you bring your own laptop, you can get free Wi-Fi access in this area, too. There are no posters advertising trips or tours or special offers or discounts at local bars or restaurants; this suited us, as we just like to be able to get basic, value-for-money accommodation and aren't interested in the whole "meeting fellow travelers" experience. So, if you are the sort of backpacker who likes to hook up with like-minded travelers, this may not be the hostel for you; perhaps it's easier to do this if you stay in a dormitory, however.

In the basement, there is a kitchen and adjoining lounge/dining room with television. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of pots and pans, plates, and cutlery. However, the fridge is crammed with food stuffs of questionable age and the worktops are virtually unusable, as they are covered with packets of cereal, loaves of bread, and half-drunk bottles of wine. This, we find, is a common problem in hostels, as people often leave unused food behind in the hope that others will use it -- and invariably nobody bothers and the food just stays where it is. Being responsible people, we washed what we used immediately, but other guests didn't and left dirty pans in the sink. Cleanliness isn't really the issue here; it is just difficult to do what you need to because of the clutter.

ALUR Hostel Tallinn Old Town offers good value, budget accommodation in a great location.

Old Town Alur Hostel is located inside the old town, and as such, is in the vicinity of most things you may want to see in Tallinn. The directions are a bit weird -- it isn't opposite the Russian Embassy at all. We found it useful to print out a map before arriving -- we found it with relative ease that way. Also, the public transport there is shocking -- they just expect you to know where what goes and there are hardly any maps around so try and find some information online before you go.

The hostel itself is rather nice and safe -- it's relatively small and away from the louder parts of the town. We found most things we needed close by. The rooms are new and have decent beds but are pretty sparse otherwise and there are no lockers. Security is ok, keys have to be left at the always-attended reception by the last person to leave the room.

The facilities are decent but not very welcoming. There is a kitchen and common room in the basement with most things you would need, but during our stay it felt abandoned, given the very low numbers of people there. The bathrooms are separate from the toilets and have to be shared by a whole floor, which wasn't a problem for us given the lack of people around the place -- but if it was full, there might be issues.

Overall the hostel is great value and clean enough for anyone but the most fastidious person. We would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay on a budget.

The location is great, the staff are friendly but it is kind of weird. The room was a bit cold in the night and there was too much noise sometimes because some people from the staff seem to live there so if the phone rings or whatever you are likely to also wake up. Neither the bathroom nor the WC were exactly clean. This hostal is pretty basic, with a bed to rest and some breakfast in the morning. Apart from that I would not say it's one of the cleanest or nicest places. It is located near everything which was great.

Super hostel with a perfect location! You can walk to the city center! It is also a cheap hostel, but it is nice and friendly.

Alur Hostel Tallinn Old Town Reviews from the Web

Great location in the old town and really good kitchen kitchen facilities, therefore it is very good value for money and a great option for staying in Tallinn. My main issue was that the lock for the baggage storage under the bed was broken, but otherwise a great stay!

Was clean and the beds were comfortable. However, some of our sheets had holes in them. The location was great - just a bit tricky to find. This hostel was advertised as Old Town Alur but it was actually Lai 22 which we found odd!

I cant speak to much for Alur because I was given a room at Lai 22 next door. My main issue was the cleanliness of the place, and the mattresses which really need replaced. The staff were beyond lovely and the location is perfect. Weird atmosphere in common area though and often a strange smell. Wouldnt recommend sadly

keep kitchen clean at least and there are no proper utensils for cooking. rest is just okay.

The hostel was kind of dirty and the floors were sticky (the sheets were full of stains and there was an odd odour in corridors). Anyway the staff was friendly and helpful.

Cleanliness was a big let down for our group. The showers were moldy and the shower curtains were very stiff for some reason. I didn't feel clean even after showering because of the state of the showers.

Every morning they would clean the common areas, but it always felt more dirty after cleaning the floors. After mopping, the floors would smell really bad and I would sometimes hold my breath when walking out of my room.

Staff was always very accomodating and super nice though!

Good hostel. Very social, so probably not be ideal for remote work/study. This is actually the same hostel as Lai 22, which is around the corner.

Our first hostel experience on our trip and what a fantastic start. The rooms were comfortable. The people working were so welcoming. Would stay again and would recommend to anyone.

Amazing location, friendly and helpful staff, great vibe

A lovely and totally social place to stay in Tallinn ! I would always come back again

very friendly and bustling, great atmosphere and met some fab people. Perfect location

Couldn't express in words.Perfect place :)

Super central, bed so comfy and fine facilities.

Great atmosphere with lovely staff and good bar inside

Great location and nice staff. The beds in the dorms are also super comfy!

I had a great stay at the hostel. The staff is very nice and helpful, always smiling. The hostel is well located and the bed are quite comfy. I would recommand this hostel to anyone who's looking for a warm place to meet travelers and enjoy Tallinn.

The place has a great atmosphere. Even people who stay at tge hostel for work are open & talkative. The price for a 10bed dorm is the same as when i stayed in Tallinn a decade ago.

The staff is super friendly & welcoming.

As the place is mostly staffed by volunteers the cleanliness is quite variable. Some people clean really well, while others clean the bare minimum (which is rather gross).

Also I would expect people at the reception to give some recommendations about town.

Top rating seems like a casual thing for something that truly inspires you. Ive been many places and have been accommodated to many extra perks in my travels. But, nothing better then this hostel in Estonia has been such a highlighted feature for me. And all thanks to the staff and people there! I will be returning Host Alur. Thank you for a great time!

Even with the cost, I would avoid this hostel. The common room and bar has potential but still didn't create a great atmosphere. My room was really dirty and seemed to be filled with people who had been there for weeks and didn't care about others. I left a night early because I couldn't handle the mess

Phenomenal people. Lovely location. Would visit again! PJ was an absolute delight :)
