Penguin Hostel

The Review

Penguin Hostel provides a friendly, comfortable environment with a colorful, modern interior. The spacious common areas allow for a social atmosphere to mingle with other travelers. It has great Wi-Fi and large enough lockers to fit moderately sized backpacks. It offers tour information and most things you would want in a hostel.

The Location

The hostel is conveniently located on the same street as the bus station, about a block away and very easily found. It is one street over and a few minutes walk from the main street in downtown El Calafate where most of the shops, restaurants and tour companies can be found. The location allows for easy access to downtown in a spot far enough so as not to be overly noisy.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are frequently cleaned and maintained throughout the hostel by a cleaning lady. The dorm beds are comfortable enough with a small ladder built-in to permit an easy climb to the top. The heaters in the bedrooms take up some needed wall space but ensure you will not be cold. The large lockers make up for the relatively small area in the bedrooms to unpack your bag. However, you must bring your own lock. The bathrooms are sufficient, clean, and have enough hot water for all guests. The doors to the bathrooms could be designed better, as it sticks and can be loud when opening and closing.

Common Spaces

The common areas have an open inviting atmosphere with colorful, unique décor, a lot of natural light, and openings between the kitchen and living room. The living area has a TV, drinks for sale, comfortable couches and useful tourist info at the front desk. There are some magazines available to read as well. The kitchen has everything you need to cook but there is no free breakfast provided and refrigerator space may be tight. Ample seating and tables are spread throughout the area.

Overall, Penguin Hostel has some minor improvements it could make but is a great place to stay if you are on a tight budget and want to visit El Calafate for a few days. Its convenient location next to the bus station and downtown, as well as the tourist info it provides, make it easy to navigate your stay. The large lockers will give you peace of mind that all your valuables will be safely locked while you’re out exploring the many attractions El Calafate is known for.
