Gjestehuset 102 is located in the northernmost town in the world, Longyearbyen.
The Location
The hostel is located in the new area of the town, where most student accommodations are. It is at the end of the main road that crosses around the town; more precisely it is the second-last building before the road ends.
It is very convenient to reach the hostel, as there is a direct bus connection from the airport, and the last bus stop is right in front of the hostel. In addition, the hostel is well known in town and most of the tours organized by agencies in the city provide a pick up/drop off service free of charge at the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
It offers four-bed rooms, both double rooms and private rooms. There are bunk beds that are quite comfortable and large, with lamps and two closets. There are some power points in the room, but they're very low on the wall, so it can be uncomfortable for those that stay on the upper bunk. In each room there is also a sink, but no toilet. Bathrooms are shared with the other rooms and there are many on each of the two floors. They are clean and spacious, and showers are large with copious hot water. it also has some bathrooms with only toilet (no shower) so there is less waiting. Towels are provided free of charge.
Common Spaces
The hostel also offers a common area with sofas and TV where you can relax, socialize, read a book, or watch a movie. Additionally there is a kitchen that guests can use at no extra charge, and it is furnished with all the equipment for cooking. Plus there is a fridge and a freezer to store the food. Breakfast is also included in the price of the room. Right in front of the reception there is a big computer that guests can use to book their trips in an easy and fast way.
Summary
The hostel is easily recognizable from the outside and easy to be reached from the airport with the bus. It is also very clean inside and bathrooms and common areas are clean as well, which makes your stay comfortable. Location is good and bad at the same time -- it is more than two kilometers away from the center of the town, requiring a long walk of about thirty-five minutes and in winter the weather is usually cold and windy (and snowy). However, it is at the end of the road, so with a short walk you reach the bottom of the mountain, with not much light pollution, offering a great view of the landscape and a good chance of spotting the Northern Lights, typically during the winter.
We suggest this hostel if you are traveling solo or with a few friends, as it is quite easy to meet other people in the common areas or during the free breakfast and it allows to cook your own food in very expensive Svalbard.

Gjestehuset 102 is located in Nybyen, at the top of the Longyear Valley, two kilometres away from the city centre.
The guesthouse was formerly the “millionaires’ mansion” arranged for the best and most experienced miners, built in 1946. In 1999, Barrack 102 became Gjestehuset 102, currently hosting the happiest visitors in town. Gjestehuset 102 has 61 beds (7 singles, 19 doubles and 4 four-person rooms). We do not offer a luxury stay, but a 5-star experience in the Arctic!
Gjestehuset 102 is a great spot to start your adventure for trips both summer and winter since we are surrounded by 2 glaciers, mountains, coal mines, fiords and wildlife! A lucky guest can manage to find polar foxes and reindeer hanging around, just by taking a look through the window. Get speechless during the dark season, where you can experience the starry skies, or see the Northern Lights dancing towards the south a beautiful phenomenon we can see both day and night here in Longyearbyen.
