Mini Hut Hostel

The Review

If you're after a quiet, relaxing stay away from the hustle and bustle of the busy town, then Mini Hut Hostel is the place for you.

The Location

The hostel is located right next to the Siem Reap River and is a good fifteen-minute walk to town. In the evenings you can sit on the terrace and watch the children play football on the river bank or catch fish in the river. There are one or two places to eat nearby, but the restaurants are in town. There are plenty of little shops selling the essentials like water, cigarettes, and beer. Mini Hut is a wooden building and everything is well kept and very clean.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Our eight-bed dorm is of a fair size with cubicle-style beds and privacy curtains. Underneath the bed are large wooden drawers, however, they do not lock. At the foot end of the bed, inside the cubicle are very large lockable lockers, however, the lock is very small, flimsy, and really easy to break into. We do not feel our valuables are secure in these lockers. The rooms are air conditioned and we have control of the remote. The lighting in the room is terribly dim; even with the main light and reading lights on, we can barely see what we're doing. The reading light is fixed in the wall, so we cannot move it around to our best advantage. Each bed is equipped with two USB ports and an electric socket. The mattress and pillow are comfortable and the blanket serves its purpose.

We have a big and spacious shared bathroom down the corridor. The shower and toilet is in one room, but divided with a curtain. There is also plenty of space to move around in the shower and toilet area. The water pressure is strong and the showers are hot, which is fantastic after day walking around at the temples.

Common Spaces

The only common space is the terrace, which faces the river. Unfortunately, the view is obstructed by dozens of cables, which run across the front of the building. The terrace area is a nice idea, however, it's so hot and humid outside, so we opted for the air-conditioned bedroom. The terrace is equipped with a wooden table and four wooden chairs; it's not the most comfortable space after a day out and about, but serves as a great spot for smokers.

The bedrooms are on the first floor and the reception is on the ground floor. The reception area is open plan, facing the road and river. The entrance to the reception is obstructed with motorcycles, which are available for rent -- we could barely manage to get past them with our backpacks. The staff know limited English and had to call the lady from the tour company, which is on the same property, to help with our request. The Wi-Fi is strong.

There are no extras at this hostel. You have a bed in a dorm and that's it. There is no coffee, tea, water, breakfast, exchange library, work space, social space, TV, fridge, or kitchen.

The hostel itself is clean, peaceful, and comfortable. If you want to meet and speak to other people, this is not the place for you. The hostel is a bit pricey for what you get. Considering the location and that there are no extras, besides a bed in a dorm, the price is too high compared to other hostels in Siem Reap.
