Freestone Hillside Cabins (formally Freestone Backpackers) is the place to come if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of busy city hostels.
Set on 10 acres of tree studded hillside sits your very cosy, hand-built timber cabin with kitchen, gas cook top, log burner and solar lights (NO POWER POINTS or BATHROOM)
Get back to basics without sacrificing comfort. The cabins give you a true rural country, pioneering experience to sit back and enjoy the peace on the doorstep of Fiordland. In the kitchen you’ll find a gas burner, solar lighting and fresh cold running water...no need for bottled water here. Plates, cooking pots etc. There is NO POWER other than solar lighting so no fridge, but there is one in the communal laundry area at the bottom of the hill. This is where you will also find the showers and toilets. NO TOILET IN THE CABIN. Wi-Fi is available but being a rural property, is not always overly reliable.
There are 6 cabins on the property. 4 have a Queen bed and fold out couch for extra guest. 1 is more of a backpacker style with bunks and sleeps 4-5 guests and lastly we have 1 self contained cabin with own toilet, shower and electricity. The cabins each have a private front deck to enjoy the tranquility and views. Unfortunately we no longer provide dorm beds just the entire cabins.
Bring a torch (or smart phone light) it is very dark at night and you may have to go down the hill to use the toilets!! The path is uneven so take care. There is NO POWER in the cabins apart from solar lighting but you can charge your devices in the communal laundry area or in the house. There is a coin operated washing machine and dryer in the communal block where the toilets and showers are located.
*If you are not planning to arrive until late at night this may not be the best place for you. Freestone is more of a destination rather than a stopover

• From Queenstown the journey takes around 2 hours to drive via State Highway 6 and New Zealand State Highway 94/State Highway 94.
• From the Te Anau Mossburn Highway turn left onto Hillside Manapouri Road. In less than 10 minutes you will find a turning into Freestone Hillside Cabins on your left, next to Cabot Lodge (please don't drive up to Cabot Lodge- If you go over a cattle grid you have gone into their driveway)
• Coming from Te Anau...once you reach Manapouri Village turn left up hillside Manapouri Road. We are just on your right past the camp ground and before Hillside Nursery
