Good place to stay
good, helpful, friendly, clean, tidy.
Generally good, but some deficits
Good except that Reception was to open at 7 a.m., for return of key deposit, but didn't open until 7:30 a.m., delaying my leaving. Some bedrooms were near the lounge, so those who go to bed early could be adversely affected by noise from the lounge. Bathroom needs some upgrade -- for example only one of three sinks had a working hot water faucet.
Great Place to Stay
Fantastic place to stay. Quiet, clean, friendly.
Great stay, lovely and clean. Met interesting people.
Close to everything, Great shower, Good management, interesting people.
Westport Hostel - Bazil's Backpackers, a BBH-registered hostel, is run by the two owners, who are very friendly and seem to genuinely enjoy what they do. They are constantly making upgrades, and have created a clean, comfortable, and social hostel that makes a perfect base for exploring Westport.
The hostel is located right around the corner from the bus intercity bus stop (although the Kiwi Experience bus drops off right in front of the hostel). It's just two blocks from the main street and right next to a large park, with a great view of the mountains. There is plenty of parking at the hostel or on the street.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are very secure, with new locks on the doors that can only be opened with a room key. Unfortunately, there are no in-room lockers -- but security doesn't seem to be a problem. There is a ten-bed dorm, a family unit, singles, triples, and doubles. The beds are a mixture of bunk and single beds. Each room is equipped with an overhead light, but there are no individual reading lamps.
There are bathrooms in two locations -- inside the main house, and out in buildings in back. There are only three or four toilets and showers inside. The showers inside have unlimited heat, but the outside showers are powered differently and so they only have about ten minutes of hot water. All the showers are spacious, with plenty of hooks, good water pressure, and space to change. The toilets and showers are all kept very clean, as a cleaning crew comes in daily.
The backyard is large, comfortable, and beautifully landscaped. There are hammocks, chairs, and tables around where people will frequently hang out or eat dinner. The official common room is inside -- there is a TV, plenty of movies, a small fireplace, couches, and beanbags. You will frequently see one of the two hostel cats in this room. These areas are very comfortable, and are full of people from the Kiwi Experience bus in the evenings. There are also computers that you can pay to use, a book exchange, and some games. There is no official luggage storage, but the owners will keep your things in reception if you need them to.
The kitchen has a large fridge, two stoves/ovens, and plenty of pots and pans. Everything is centered around an island that doubles as a cutting board. There is a long table in the kitchen, but people seem to prefer eating outside to eating there. Alcohol is not allowed after 9:30 p.m., so it doesn't get too rowdy. Between the Kiwi bus and the alcohol limitations, you get a social hostel that doesn't get out of hand.
This hostel is clean, social, and has friendly and helpful staff. They also have various sports equipment (like bikes) to rent out, and will gladly help you with any activities you may want to do. Overall, it's a great place to stay in a small town.
Great Kiwi Hostel Lives
After traveling around NZ for a few months It was great to arrive at Bazils, true Kiwi feel about the place, Owners are very friendly and helpful, told us all the secret spots to go visit around the area. Loved the place, good on ya guys.
Stayed at this place precisely once. Will never return. The checkout time was 10am and after we requested a short extension of the check out time, we were hounded out of our room by the staff in an incredibly rude manner. Definitely one of the least friendly places I have ever stayed.
This hostel is just as nice as those pictures make it look. One of the nicest, homiest hostels we stayed in throughout NZ. Not much to do in Westport though.
