Vintage Paris Gare du Nord by Hiphophostels Reviews

Vintage Hostel Gare du Nord is a multi-floor, modern hostel boasting private and dorm rooms; it's likely one of the only hostels to have a gym as well. For those carrying heavy luggage, there is an elevator to reach the higher floors.

The Location

As the name implies, the location is close to Gare du Nord for easy access to the airport and other long-distance destinations. It isn’t that close to the major tourist attractions of Paris -- with about an hour walking from the Eiffel Tower, other attractions are on the way -- but overall, Paris is quite walkable. Otherwise, the hostel is close to several metro stations. The area is good for some food away from the tourist center.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm room has carpeted floors, which is nice for the feet, but we usually don’t consider it the most hygienic in these kinds of establishments; in this case it does seem clean enough. The room isn’t that big, with two bunk beds in the room. The beds are just ok with sheets included (pillowcase is missing) for you to make up the bed. Unfortunately, they are your typical cheap, metal, squeaky bunk beds. A light and power outlet are available with each bed and there are even two USB entries. The air conditioner/heater in the room is great for both the cold and warm seasons of Paris. There are cages under the bunk bed for bag storage, though in our room one cage is missing from under one bed.

A small bathroom in the room is shared with the four people of each dorm room; there's a good, modern shower including hair dryer, but on the downside, the toilet is also in this bathroom and is not separated, though there are also toilets in the downstairs common areas in case the shower is in use.

Common Spaces

The hostel boasts a common room with plenty of well-kept, modern facilities. The spacious common area includes a lounge-like area with rocking chairs and a TV; there is some free coffee (as supply lasts) and tea. The kitchen area has tables where you can eat and the kitchen is equipped well enough to cook a simple meal or just store your meals in the common fridge. The breakfast served here is nothing to fancy with some coffee, tea, and croissant.

There are plenty of coin lockers in the common area to hide your valuables and a separate room for luggage storage in case of early arrival or late departure.

Most unique of the offered facilities is a gym in the basement. There are also showers in the basement near the gym, which can be used if you've already checked out. Laundry can be done here and there are toilets with music playing, for that added atmosphere.

Because of the big size we didn't experience it as a social hostel, but that could depend on the guests. There is a nice common area and a gym that could allow it to be.

Summary

This is a fine, modern hostel with all the needed facilities and more that is affordable when traveling alone in Paris. It's good for a stopover near Gare du Nord or for few days stay to see Paris outside the tourist center, but still in a nice area to come back to and enjoy the evening away from the tourist attractions. Generally, staff can help point out some nearby food. Though the squeaky beds can be annoying, at least there are only four people in each room.
