Islesburgh House is Shetland's main Hostel, situated in central Lerwick and offering quality accommodation to the budget traveller and local groups. Open 50 weeks a year (closed over Christmas and New Year), the Hostel is equipped for every hosteller's need, and is fully accessible to disabled users. The comfortable accommodation is provided in dormitories, group and family rooms.
Islesburgh House Hostel
Islesburgh House was built in 1907 for Andrew Smith, owner of one of the largest companies to profit from the herring boom. After being in use for many years as a youth hostel and meeting place the building has been beautifully restored and refurbished. Two floors are fully accessible for disabled users and the hostel offers two or four person bedroom accommodation, or group dormitories. The fully equipped hostel has 64 bed spaces and is central to all amenities. The hostel has one of the few 5-star gradings given by the Scottish Tourist Board.
Islesburgh House is conveniently close to most amenities and services, and the extensive schedule of transport services make the Hostel an ideal base from which to explore the rest of Shetland.
A very well equipped kitchen is available for hostelers self catering, while the Central Cafe in the Community Centre next door is a popular eating place for tourists and local residents.
