Sunrise Lodge is a clean, well-kept place on the main road entering Kaikoura. There are several wireless internet access options, with different companies and prices, and the hostel usually gives you some free complimentary access included in the accommodation. The hostel has laundry facilities but no drying machines, so you will need to hang your clothes afterwards. It is a safe place for bikes, as they have a shed in the back and it is not next to the main road.
Kaikoura is a town between Christchurch and Blenheim with various tourist attractions such as whale and dolphin watching and Maori tours. Although it's on the main road from Blenheim to Kaikoura, the hostel's main building is quiet as it is away from the traffic. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and supermarkets as well as two convenience stores at a five-minute walking distance and a large supermarket at a ten-minute walking distance. The town center is at a twelve-minute walking distance.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are basic but quite clean, with carpeted floors and large windows to the hostel yard. The hostel is located in a main building with the common areas and several double and twin rooms, and there is another separate building with a dorm room. Double and twin rooms are not very spacious, and they have a mirror, a chair, bedside lights, and a small bin. Bathrooms are generally clean and standard, with a shower, toilet, and sink. There is one bathroom in each building.
The common spaces are in the main hostel building and they include a kitchen, a dining area, and a lounge. The medium-sized kitchen is enough for the number of rooms in the hostel. It has two microwaves, two electric ovens, plates, pots, pans, cutlery, cooking utensils, free common spices, and one large fridge. There is an island in the middle of the kitchen for preparing food. The kitchen has plenty of windows with natural light filling in the room.
Adjacent to the kitchen is a dinning area with tables. The next room is a lounge with various sofas and a TV. There is a phone for free local calls, as well as an international paid phone. The room has heating and several lamps. Outside the building, a common exterior area extends the dinning area, with patio chairs surrounding a low wooden table. There is another wooden picnic table and benches surrounded by plants and an area for hanging your wet clothes.
This is an affordable, small, convenient hostel with most of the services an independent traveler needs, that is close to some services and has a warm atmosphere.
Best stay in NZ!
I was for quite a while in the Sunrise Lodge and just loved being there! Tim and Joan are helpful, really nice and always trying to have a high standard! The hostel is directly at a beautiful (stones though) beach and if you like dogs you can take Tim's dog out for a walk. The kitchen and living area is quite big for the total size of the hostel and its getting really cozy. You get to know all the people who are staying there and I decided to stay longer than I planned. If you need anything or just want a nice little talk you can go to the coffee owl with lovely Hakeeha. Best coffee in town! (And while you are staying in the hostel you get a little discount).
My sister and I visited Kaikoura in Sept/Oct of 07 and ended up in the little town and great hostel. The hosts Marc and Osi are great and the rooms were all made up, great place to stay, and would recommend it to anyone.
stopped here 01/12/2005 till 06/12/2005 but was only gonna stop for two nights originally. did so much here and that was all thanks to the owners. had loads of info available about things to see here. Went cray fishing two days with brent, released a blue penguin back into the wild one night, went sperm whale watching one morning, and watch the sun rise on the pebble beach one morning about 4 with all the good friends we made while stopping here this short time. Mega.
A nice place to stay in Kaikoura
We went there in April and got the en-suite room on the back which has a nice "sunrise" view of the ocean. The room was spotless with four single beds (no bunk). All the amenities are there including kitchen, refrig, microwave, utensil, and even a radio. The hosts were nice and appeared excited to welcome guesses. The only catch was that there was no heater installed in the living area, so we all had to group inside the bedroom after a while. A nice place to stay, overall.
Warm hostel with Super clean room
the best hostel! the hosts are very nice and friendly -- they really make you feel like home, and they will show you around the hostel when you first arrive. the room and bathroom were spotless clean. they even provided lots of bikes that you can use for free!
We only stayed here one night and didn't eat in but the facilities looked fine. No bunks but the bedrooms surround the lounge so we were kept awake by people chatting in the lounge. Seemed like it would have been a nice place if we'd have had longer there.
This hostel was great. There was a really friendly and personal touch to the place. And it was so nice sleeping in a single, non bunk bed for a change. When i am next in Kaikoura, i will definitely be sleeping here again.
