This is a nice hostel three minutes walk from the mall. As mentioned before, there isn't a lift and, from what I can gather, most of the dorms are on the third floor, which is fine if you like a cardiovascular workout everytime you want to get something from your room! The kitchen is tiny for the amount of people that actually stay here -- get your timing right and you'll be fine though! The TV room is basic and the internet wasn't working when I was staying. Don't believe the signs that are dotted around saying they're in the process of renovating -- apparently they were there when one of the other guests visited a year ago! Still, it is a nice hostel and is kept spotless. The staff are friendly and helpful. I'd definitely recommend it.
Montgomery's (Monty's) is a great hostel! The location couldn't be any better. It is one block from the Elizabeth Street Pier, which has a gorgeous harbor full of amazing ships and great fish and chip eateries. Monty's is about a four-minute walk from the famous Salamanaca Market on Saturdays. It is one block away from a major bus stop where many local bus routes stop. It is one block from many different ATMs and about one or two blocks from a large shopping mall. There are plenty of bars in the area, including the bar directly next door to Monty's. We stayed at Monty's for four nights and for two out of the four nights there were police cars at the bar because of bad bar fights. We'd recommend other bars in the area, although there is a good selection of karaoke there. The kitchen in Monty's is pretty good. Most other backpackers do a good job of cleaning up after themselves, but even then, the cleaning crew makes sure the kitchen is spotless each morning. A huge downside to Monty's is that there isn't an elevator (which is especially tough for people staying on the third floor and dragging your luggage up three flights of steep stairs). The third floor has plenty of private bathrooms. We never had to wait in line to use a toilet or a shower. The rooms are large enough for the amount of people in each room. Sometimes it feels like the room is colder than the temperature outside, but there is an adequate heating system once it finally kicks in. It can get loud at night from the bar next door and the traffic on the street corner if you have your window open, but the windows have good enough insulation that if you close them, it drowns out all the noise. There isn't really a TV lounge at Monty's. There is a TV in the room where the reception desk is, but it's not convenient to watch TV or movies there. Also, the internet was not working at Monty's and we didn't even notice any computers, so the staff just refers you to a local internet cafe. Overall a pretty good hostel to stay at, where you will meet a lot of nice backpackers from all over the world!

This hostel is fine -- big, a bit damp but you can't get much more central. The kitchen is in desperate need of a revamp and extention, but according to the owners, that's about to happen.

Nice place though it's not comperable to Backpackers somewhere else in Oz. It's like Tassie, quite, nice, friendly. One big problem: all the stairs, no elevator, so you have to bring your luggage up to the third floor, pretty hard! Nice TV room, kitchen o.k., friendly staff, can highly recommend this!
This is one of the most densely packed hostels I've been to in Australia. The seven of us stayed in a room for ten, sharing with three others and there was barely enough room to walk in a single file. Having said that, the room and facilities are clean and tidy. The hostel is close to the CBD so parking is a problem, especially at night when its small carpark for four cars is full and the street parking has 2-hour limit.
The hostel was clean; the only drawback was no elevator. It's centrally located, and I found the staff helpful.
Centrally located, comfortable with clean bathrooms, kitchen and fridges. It has all one looks for in a hostel. The only draw backs - cost of internet at $10 an hour (internet cafe two blocks away is $5 an hour), no one was able to tell me how much the public phone cost to make a phone call, and the staff, though friendly, were not particularly helpful. I was not booked on the tour which I had requested. Still I highly recommend the place.
