Chez La Mer Backpackers Reviews

Chez la Mer Backpackers is located easy to find. The reception is comprised of a small table on the left as you enter the hostel. It is beautifully decorated inside the hostel, and a gorgeous landscaped backyard with lots of entertainment area. It is an affordable and clean hostel for budget travelers, but not ideal for light sleepers as it can be noisy.

The Location

This hostel is located on the main road as you enter Akoroa. The hostel features on-street parking and is within walking distance to the pier, bakery, petrol station, and convenience store. It is approximately twenty-five minutes' walk to the strip of shops with lots of restaurants.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Each room is differently and beautifully decorated. The door locks don't seem to work properly but the owners are happy to fix it or place you in another room if required. Heaters are available in each room. The floor is squeaky and walls are thin, so it can be noisy if you have rowdy neighbours. The bathroom is clean and of adequate size with hooks for you to hang your dry clothes. Showers are great.

Common Spaces

There are lots of sitting areas inside and in the backyard. The hostel is two stories with a kitchen and dining table on each level. The backyard is beautifully landscaped. The hostel is not a social place as people tend to stay here overnight and travel in groups.

Summary

Overall, this is a great place to stay. There is a pub two buildings away. This is a hostel converted from an original house when Akoroa was colonised by the French, so beware that this place might not be an ideal place to stay if you are a light sleeper.

Fantastic!

A clean and friendly hostel, my stay here was delightful. Free tea & coffee & wireless, plenty of communal space. The owners also run a dolphin sailing cruise, which was excellent! A fantastic place to stay.

Perfect

This place is pretty special. We had a double room for a couple of nights and loved this place. It is a really special hostel -- very homey, with a warm log fire raging in the lounge room over winter and the best-equipped kitchen I've ever come across. It basically feels like you're staying in a home. The best thing was how friendly everyone was. Unlike all the "Kiwi Experience"/"GAP year" backpackers we came across in New Zealand, people were so friendly here and would, for example, offer to make you a cup of tea when they made one for themselves. Not suited to those who are looking to drink, party, and fornicate their way around the world -- more a place to relax and rejuvenate.

This was a nice hostel to stay in and the owners were nice, but we think safety is a problem here. There are no locks on the dorm doors and we had money stolen from a padlocked bag. We later found out that this has happened before so were not impressed! It was also very noisy and the kitchens were tiny. We won't be returning!

I loved it, so homey. fantastic garden in back.

American owned. French atmosphere.

Spent 3 nights there could have spent a week. Groceries close by, everything within walking distance.

This is a lovely, wee hostel. It was very homely, and the garden was amazing.
