The Review

If you are looking for an amazing hostel experience in Riga, look no further -- The Naughty Squirrel Backpackers has it all! This hostel has won multiple awards. For anyone who stays here, it's easy to see why. For a reasonable price, guests get comfortable beds, excellent facilities, recommendations and assistance from wonderfully helpful staff, and -- above all -- a fun, social atmosphere that simply cannot be beat. The hostel is also very secure and clean and offers a great range of tours.

The Location

The Naughty Squirrel is located right in the heart of Riga's beautiful Old Town and is an easy, ten-minute walk from the international bus station. It is within walking distance to all of the city's old town attractions, as well as areas a bit further out, such as the lovely Art Nouveau District and the hipster Miera (Peace) Street, perfect for anyone in search of a great cup of coffee. The Naughty Squirrel is also close to a number of great cafes, bars, and restaurants, which The Naughty Squirrel staff will very helpfully tell you about upon check-in.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms at The Naughty Squirrel are comfortable and spacious. The bunk beds, each named after a different European city, are strong and fitted with comfortable mattresses. Each bed also has a curtain for privacy as well as individual lights and power points. Another thoughtful touch is the multiple hooks on the side of the bunks on which guests can hang their towels and coats. The rooms are also very clean and secure, requiring swipe card access to enter. For extra security guests can also lock their stuff away in the large cages stored under the beds.

There are multiple showers and toilets on both levels of the hostel. The showers are nice and hot with great water pressure. The shower rooms also have hooks and a separate dry area so you can leave your stuff on the floor. All bathroom facilities are kept very clean.

Common Spaces

The common spaces at this hostel are comfortable and well thought out. The main living area is a good size, fitted out with a number of comfortable sofas and bean bags. This room also has two free computers for guests to use. A second common area also has multiple sofas and a foosball table. A small bar is attached to the reception where staff dispense cheap drinks twenty-four/seven. There is also a small but practical kitchen/dining area attached to the bar, perfect for those deep and (not so) meaningful conversations.

Above all, The Naughty Squirrel has a great atmosphere and is fundamentally a party hostel. Anyone staying at this social hostel will have no trouble making new friends, either over a drink on site, at one of the daily dinners at a local Latvian folk restaurant organised by the hostel, or over a competitive game of beer pong. The staff at this hostel also fully immerse themselves into party vibe as well, and will go out of their way to make sure you have a good time.

Although there are cheaper hostels in Riga, The Naughty Squirrel really is the best of the best and is well worth a few extra dollars. For anyone looking for a comfortable, well-thought-out hostel in Riga with an incredibly fun atmosphere, The Naughty Squirrel is the place for you.

Definite do!
especially the location in the old city centre in combination with cleanliness and fair pricing makes this hostel a good place to stay. Staff is friendly and genuinely interested. The only true disappointment is the lack of squirrels either naughty or good, there are none to be found. do the pub tour on your first night to learn what pubs are worth going. Did the tour with Nuna and had an excellent time. Also the shooting tour is worth every penny!

although room was nice, in the middle of night got woken up by people shouting in corridor/room next to us.
nice, clean hostel with great common areas and clean kitchen! rooms were well equipped and spacious. lockers are available, but not inside the rooms i stayed in. staff was friendly, helpful and in party mood! lots of activities provided by the hostel. one small mistake concerning reservation, but solution was found in a few seconds. prices of activities are pretty high sometimes, but that's not the hostel's mistake, since they just communicate with the organisers of the trips.
We just got back from a random trip to Riga because of the cheap brilliance of ryanair and we had an amazing time, this is probably mainly due to the hostel we stayed in! As well as being the cleanest hostel with the best facilities we have all probably ever stayed in, its also the friendliest with fantastic staff. From the moment we got there we were welcomed and made to feel at home and any advice/directions were given straight away. The location of the hostel is also brilliant, really close to anything you want to see! Highly recommended and we'll hopefully be back soon!

My wife and I stayed at Argonaut for five days (14-18 Sept 2005). This was our second hostel stay ever, and I can tell you it was an AWESOME experience. The staff are excellent. They were always friendly, more than helpful and very easy to talk to. We made our reservation online, and had no problem with that. The small kitchen has no stove, but it is so cheap to eat in Latvia, it was really no problem. The coffeemaker is nice, and there are small tables to sit at to relax. The TV/community room was large, with comfortable couches. There was a VERY large plasma TV on the wall, and a nice selection of DVDs to watch. There is one computer with free Internet. It was very easy to check e-mail/pay bills and whatever we needed to do while away from home. There was one day that the Internet was not working, BUT the girl at the front desk had it working by the end of the day, as she promised. (Really NOT a major problem for us, I've got better things to do than stay on the computer all day.) The room we stayed in was a private double room. It was very clean and more than adequate for our needs. The linens were provided and the bathrooms, which were out in the hall, were clean, We always had hot water and I never had a problem getting into the bathroom, even though there were a lot of people in the hostel over the weekend. The location of the hostel is perfect, VERY easy access to Old Town and all the tramlines. Would I stay there again? In a heartbeat. I Love RIGA, and I can't wait to go back. So much has changed since I was there in 1990. If you have any questions you can e-mail me at:

They had no problem at all with my reservation and I had a great time there. I met some great people whom I traveled with all over the Baltic States. A real party place, though — not really for relaxation. The management is pretty easy-going and the location is very good, within walking distance of everything. No stove, lockers or reading lights prevents it getting my fifth star.
It seemed good to me. Friendly, free Internet, kitchen space with a microwave, and a lovely warm shower. No complaints.
This hostel is definitely average. There's constant chaos. We arrived at 4 p.m. and our room wasn't ready, last night's guests were still in there. And you constantly hear of numerous booking stuff-ups, where people booked and paid for the first night but they have no beds available. The facilities aren't the greatest either. Out of the three toilets on our floor one has no seat and the bathrooms could do with a bit of a scrub. The adventure tours they advertise weren't even on offer. The only thing the place has going is free Internet and cheap beer!!! Don't bother.
