Lovely, friendly hostel.
We stayed here for two nights in July 2008. Our first hostel for this trip, it was a lovely start to our travels. We were originally booked into separate dorms (male dorm and female dorm) but as it was quiet we had an eight bed dorm to ourselves! The shower and toilet were at the end of the corridor, very clean, if a bit dated. The kitchen was quite large considering how quiet the hostel was! Although you had to hire plates, and this wasn't widely advertised, as people walked off with ours! They do a great day out, you pay $10 to hire bikes for the day and then an additional $5 for a shuttle bus that takes you right out into the gorges, so you can cycle all around them, then back to the hostel. Lovely friendly staff. Well recommended.
Kalbarri Backpackers YHA is a typical YHA. The standard is high and all facilities work. It is almost in the centre of town and clearly signposted. If you happen to be traveling by Greyhound bus you are very lucky, as the shuttle drops you right at the front door of the place. The hostel looks good from the outside and the inside does not disappoint either. The staff are helpful and explain where everything is for you. They are also willing to book tours for you, either with themselves or one of the other tour companies in town.
You can choose from a variety of sleeping options. Everything is catered for, from dorm rooms to doubles with televisions and ensuite. The rooms are all clean and we didn't have any issues with noise. The bathrooms are always clean and there are enough to go around. The kitchen is plenty big enough and allows lots of people to cook at once. There are tables and chairs to eat inside as well as outside. If television is your thing, there is a large screen and some comfy chairs in the lounge. The lounge adjoins the kitchen and there are some bedrooms off it also. There is a swimming pool out the back of the kitchen, which you should try to use. It is not large, but nonetheless an inviting place to be during the sweltering summers here. Checkout is at 10 p.m., but the staff will gladly look after any bags/backpacks until it is time for you to leave.
Very good double room -- motel style. Nice layout of the grounds too. Room had own kitchen attached to it.
After returning from my travels I now realise what a gem this hostel is. The staff were great, very helpful, even collected us from the airport for free.
We stayed in a double room which was modern and clean more like a hotel room. The bathroom was shared but it was clean. We only stayed for one night but I would definitely go back to this hostel, it has a good location and amenities nearby.
I enjoyed the bbq and was surprised to see that as a vegetarian I was catered for and didn't feel like I was a problem to the staff. The bbq was a good night and the chef was lively and funny.
