In the Montego Bay suburb of Ironshore, there are a couple of backpacker hostels for those that like a bit of luxury and peace and quiet while being within a short route taxi ride to the city center; The Retreat @ A Piece of Paradise is one of these hostels.
The Retreat @ A Piece of Paradise is on Patterson Avenue, a short two-minute drive, or fifteen-minute walk from the Blue Diamond shopping center. The shopping center is around eight kilometers east of Montego Bay. Minibuses from Ocho Rios to Montego Bay will drop you at the shopping center on request, from where you can also pick up a route taxi to Patterson Avenue. Local route taxis also do the journey to the shopping center from Montego Bay transportation center.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are four rooms at A Piece of Paradise. There is an apartment with three double rooms, all sharing a bathroom, sitting room, and kitchen. The double rooms all have fans and air conditioning and the sitting room is very comfortable with leather sofas and a TV. The kitchen is well equipped with kettle, microwave, cooker, and fridge. The dorm at the back of the house has four bunk beds and has its own bathroom just outside. There is also a fridge, a kettle, and a toaster in the dorm. The bunk beds are cheap, rickety metal ones with very thin mattresses, but the place is clean. The room is fan cooled and the bathroom has twenty-four-hour hot water in the shower.
The common areas are what really sell this place. The large sitting room has a number of sofas and a large flat-screen TV. There is also a pool table and table tennis. The kitchen has kettle, toaster, microwave, cooker, and fridge for use by all guests. Outside the sitting room, there is a covered veranda with soft chairs and sofa, and these look out over the swimming pool. The pool is large and clean and surrounded by sun loungers and a small bar. The grassy grounds are littered with hammocks to escape to. There is free Wi-Fi here with three routers covering the whole house and the signal is excellent.
A Piece of Paradise is a wonderful place to relax and just do very little. There is a nice view over the ocean in the distance and the private rooms are great value (not so for the dorm, which lets the place down a little). The bunk beds are very unstable and any slight movement by the guests set them rocking and rolling. The mattresses are also very thin, so you can feel the metal mesh underneath. The place is very clean and well looked after, though and it is a very easy trip into town. There are three big but docile dogs here, which routinely sleep in the entrance to the dorm, meaning you have to step over them. When we stayed, one of the dogs had made the shower cubicle its bed! Keep the gate shut! Keys to the rooms and the front gate to the property are issued to all guests and there’s parking space for a couple of vehicles.
