Panorama Mekong Hostel

The Review

Panorama Mekong Hostel is on the fourth floor of a riverfront building. It will give you a great view of the river, but it's not so easy to haul luggage up four flights of stairs.

The Location

The location is fantastic and the sunrise over the river is magnificent. It's within walking distance of the Royal Palace and Chaktomouk Hall, and eight hundred meters from Riverfront Park. The streets along the riverfront are filled with restaurants, shops, and bars, although the hostel has its own restaurant and bar on the third floor. The building is old but well looked after and the hostel is clean, considering the amount of guests moving around the place.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Our ten-bed dorm room is of a fair size, considering that luggage is stored under the beds in lockers. Each bed is equipped with electric sockets and a reading light. There are decent, thick privacy curtains, which block out most of the light. The mattresses are comfortable and each bed has a pillow and small cushion. This is very convenient for when we want to sit up in bed to read. The air conditioner works very well and the thin duvet keeps you snug at night.

The bathroom is on the other side of the building and you have to walk through the reception and social area to reach it. This is a bit uncomfortable, especially when there are lots of guests sitting around having a beer and chatting, and you have to walk through with towel and toiletries to go take a shower. The bathroom area is divided between male and female sides; there is a shared hand basin area with large mirrors, though. The female side has two toilets and two showers. The toilets are very snug -- so snug in fact that they have cut away a portion of the door so it can open all the way. If you have a backpack or you're a bit on the larger side, it's going to be very uncomfortable for you. Considering the amount of guests, they could really clean the toilet bins more regularly, as they always seems to be overflowing and smelly. The showers are so good, you don't want to get out. -- hot water, rain shower, that's all we'll say. A great addition to the shower are a few hooks and rail behind a shower curtain. This ensures that all your things stay dry, no matter how wild you get in the shower.

Common Spaces

On the third floor of the building is their restaurant and bar, which opens at around 4 p.m.; this area is open plan and has a beautiful view of the river. The reception area and common area are on the fourth floor. This area is also open plan and it's lovely to sit in the cool breeze, however, you do have the noise from the street and river below. Along the length of this area are bar stools and a countertop, where you can sit and eat, drink, or work, all while looking out over the river. There are multiple electric sockets. This common area is fairly large and even with the amount of guests moving about, we haven't felt uncomfortable.

In the mornings, you can order breakfast with a good cup of coffee and watch the goings on in the street below. The staff can arrange tours to the Killing Fields and Museum and also provide maps and information of the city. The Wi-Fi is strong and we have been working without any problems. There is a large, room-temperature water bottle where you can refill your own bottle, however, you have to pay for it.

If you don't mind all the stairs and you're after a beautiful river view, this is a great hostel. The social vibe is good and the whole place is clean and neat.
