Mission Beach Retreat YHA

The Hostelz.com Review

Mission Beach Retreat YHA is a very cozy and small hostel. They have a very nice pool out front with a beautiful waterfall in it. The hostel has a big carpark and a lot of trees and bushes outside, which is nice.

The Location

It is located very close to the beach, with some restaurants, cafés, and a small supermarket just around the corner. The beach is very big and nice, but unfortunately it was pretty much stingers and jellyfishes when we were here in late April, but if you want to swim in the ocean there's a safety net you can swim inside. The supermarket is too small to buy everything you need, and is also very expensive, but you can go on the bus that picks people up from the Greyhound and Premier bus and do some shopping in the big Woolworths near the bus station.

Rooms and Bathrooms

We stayed here one night in a nine-bed dorm. Beds are comfy, and you get two pillows in every bed! Every bed in the room has different sheets, which is pretty funny, and it feels more like home. It is air-conditioned. The room has an en suite bathroom with its own shower and toilet. The bathroom is fresh, and spacious enough.

Common Spaces

This is a very small, but also very clean and tidy hostel. There is space to chill out on sofas and watch TV or play Playstation. There's also a pretty good kitchen with several tables and two big fridges. It has enough kitchen equipment, but all the frying pans are in bad condition, and the open windows let in leaves and stuff, but it also lets the warm air out, so we guess it is a good thing anyways.

You can pay to use the Wi-Fi (there is a per-day or per-week charge). Unfortunately, the reception with Optus Network in Mission Beach is bad, so it's hard to do stuff on your mobile if you use your mobile data. Laundry is available to use if you pay; the dryer is available too, but there are also lines in the garden on which to hang your laundry.

The managers of the hostel are an elder couple. You see them around all day and they are both very nice and helpful. The rest of the staff are nice as well! They can help you book your next hostel, skydiving, and other activities. Most of the people visiting Mission Beach do it because they are going to skydive. So they just stay for a night and it's pretty hard to find friends for a longer period here.

Very cool
near to the beach (one-minute walk), friendly staff (once you know them), and they have free organic fruits.
Felt like home
The new owners are fantastic, the place is in a wonderful spot, very clean very chilled. Nothing is too much trouble. We were very impressed. Both of us had a parachute jump, what a blast. The trip to the reef was wonderful.
Mission Beach Retreat has an excellent location, right in the centre of Mission Beach -- a small town in a rainforest area located about half way between Townsville and Cairns, in Queensland. From the hostel, you can walk to everything -- all shops, supermarket, restaurants and bars, and also the beach. The hostel offers a courtesy pick up at the bus station if required. Make sure to book in advance as the bus stop is a few miles away from Mission Beach. They offer a free breakfast that is quite good. The accommodation is ok, if you don't mind having spiders in every corner of your room. The beds and mattresses are new and comfortable and there is air-conditioning in each room. The kitchen is clean and provides a full range of cooking equipment. In the colourful lounge you have a television with cable. There are good facilities -- a laundry, internet access, and bikes for rent. The hostel has also a small but pleasant swimming pool with a waterfall. The owners can arrange tours or visits you would like to do. The atmosphere is very relaxed. The two owners, who are very young, are very nice and have managed to give to this hostel a touch of colour with nice paintings and decoration in the common rooms. The only thing that could be improved is the cleanliness, which is ok, but could be better.

we stayed in this hostel for 4 nights in a double room. It had an aircon which was nice and it was quiet. During our stay they didnt clean the shared bathroom once and it was up to us to get new toilet paper when it was running out. The kitchen was always messy and there were ants everywhere!
The staff was sour and not remotely helpful. We asked for a room for five people and they stuck us in a female dorm. When we got there and they realized that there were three guys, they essentially told us it was our fault that they now had to re-arrange people. Nobody said anything about the female dorm when I booked, though. The sheets smelled and most of the rooms were stagnant and hot. However, in the female dorm, there was air-conditioning and a bathroom in the room, which was nice.
