Riverlodge Backpackers is a fairly large backpackers that is standard as far as backpackers come. Unfortunately they don't have free Wi-Fi, but you can pay a reasonable amount to use it. The place has an eclectic taste in decoration and offers plenty of ideas for things to do in and around Cape Town.
Riverlodge Backpackers is located in Pinelands, about ten kilometers outside of the city bowl in Capetown. One of the draws of this backpackers is its close proximity to the airport, but with a large number of hostels located right in the middle of downtown Cape Town, there are few other reasons to visit this hostel that is distant from so much of the activity.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are small, straightforward accommodations that each house two to four beds. There is a larger dorm that sleeps six people, but other than that, most of the rooms are fairly small, which is good in terms of noise. There is also a decent-sized yard where overlanders can drive in and sleep, as well as those who want to pitch their tents for a reasonable price. Not many places in Cape Town allow you to pitch a tent. The bathrooms are a bit spread out, with only three bathrooms inside of the main building, and another two somewhat hidden outside. It can get a bit busy in the morning during the busy season, and finding a bathroom can be a bit tricky. As far as cleanliness goes, the toilets and the showers are cleaned daily, and the showers inside have good water pressure and good hot water.
There are a number of common spaces located throughout the hostel. The first is the entrance, which is down a long, wide corridor lined with couches and chairs all the way up to reception. Once inside, there is another corridor with couches and tables, which feels like a large train car. There is also a large sitting area close to the kitchen, and a number of other tables outside for people to sit and eat. There is a communal kitchen with a couple of refrigerators as well, but unfortunately the place is plagued by flies. It is a bit difficult to sit in one place, since the flies are constantly buzzing around and landing on you, but once you get outside the kitchen area, it is not so bad.
In summary, Riverlodge Backpackers is a good place to stay for a night if you are planning on catching a flight early the next morning. It is also a decent alternative if everything is booked in Cape Town during the busy season; if not, there are tons of other good hostels located right in the center of everything and at the same price.
