Glebe Barn Hostel Reviews

Located on the Isle of Eigg off the west coast of Scotland, where sandy beaches, dramatic coastal scenery, spectacular wildlife, archaeological heritage, exceptional local cuisine and lively traditional music scene abound, this creates a unique island cultural experience – your perfect getaway destination.

The Glebe Barn, a charmingly converted 19th century building, provides comfortable shared accommodation ideally suited for individuals, family holidays, group get-togethers, school/university trips or for hosting events, conferences, workshops and retreats.

Centrally located overlooking the harbour and dramatic coastline of the Scottish mainland, the Glebe is within close walking distance from local facilities and provides an ideal base for exploring the beautiful Isle of Eigg.

The friendly, family run hostel accommodates up to 22 people in 5 bedrooms in the main building (1 double room, 2 triple rooms, a 6 bunk room and an 8 bunk room) and an additional 2 people accommodated in a separate self contained annexe.

The Glebe is a lovely spacious building with outstanding coastal views from all bedrooms and living room. There is a large open plan living/dining room with centrally located log fire, well provisioned with books, games, sound system and WiFi access throughout the building. The large kitchen is fully equiped with a large gas cooker, fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster, blender etc, and plenty of storage shelves in the pantry. There is also a drying room/lobby, laboratory room, laundry room (equipped with industrial sized washing machine and tumble dryer) and toilets/showers on each of the three floors.

The living room opens onto our peaceful south facing garden with extensive views of the Scottish west coast. The garden provides outdoor seating and a BBQ for you to relax outside and enjoy this stunning hebridean landscape.

Location and Contact

• Travelling to Eigg involves a ferry journey from either Mallaig (see or Arisaig (see, which if you are coming by train lie at the end of one of the most scenic railway journeys in the country - the famous West Coast line. For rail information please see
• The station in Mallaig is just a couple of hundred metres from the ferry, and in Arisaig it is about 3/4 mile up the hill. The sea journey is about an hour from either port, and if the weather is fair there is an excellent chance of seeing whales, basking sharks, dolphins or porpoises. The Arisaig vessel will always alter course to get close to sightings, and it is an unusual day that they will not see anything.
• You are not permitted to bring a vehicle to the island, but that only adds to the charm of your visit. If you have come up by car, there is ample parking in both villages. The island is not large and it is easy to walk to most parts and back within a day. There are bikes for hire at the pier.
• The Glebe Barn is situated a mile up from the pier. We always meet groups at the pier on their arrival, and transport their luggage. There is also a minibus service from the pier across the island.
