CrashPad Hostel Jodhpur

The Review

CrashPad Hostel Jodhpur sets out to offer an upbeat and trendy international environment to backpackers on a medium budget but does not always manage to live up to the image it tries to convey. Besides certain basic necessities like constant hot water or fast Wi-Fi missing, the indoor common area reminds you of a homestay rather than a hostel. Moreover, the use of the reception area as a souvenir shop is a bit dodgy as well.

The Location

CrashPad Jodhpur is located in the east of the city, close to Bajika Talab Lake. This is one of the more upper-class neighbourhoods of the city where the majority of backpacker hostels are found. If you are taking the train, make sure to get off at Rai ki Bagh Palace station, as it is rather far to walk from Jodhpur Junction. Most of the attractions the city has to offer are approachable on foot from here with the exception of Umaid Bhawan Palace which can be reached by tuk tuk in thirty minutes.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers several dorm rooms with colourful bunk beds and lockers. What is unique about this place is that they try their best to separate local Indian and international guests in the dorms. The beds come with nice thick blankets and two electronic plugs per person even if these are not the greatest quality and plugs constantly fall out from them. The bathrooms fall a bit short of the quality one would expect. The hot water goes away after five minutes -- even if it does eventually come back if you wait long enough -- and the sink only has cold water. Moreover, at the time of the review, there were rats in the bathroom and the receptionist refused to do anything about them stating that they are sacred animals in India.

Common Spaces

The hostel boasts with two common areas, one inside and one outside. The one inside has mattresses scattered around the floor, a bookshelf full of travel-related books, and a large TV on which video games can be played. However, most of the time these are played by the staff who make a lot of noise with it right in front of the rooms. There is another, outdoors common area but it is predominantly used for smoking so if you are a nonsmoker you definitely won't love it. It is a shame though as its fluorescent decorations look quite funky at night. There is a kitchen available for guests at a flat rate, but it is really dirty, and many of the food items -- like honey and sugar -- have ants in them. A water dispenser is accessible in the common area. However, the staff of around eight men sleep in the common area at night until quite late in the morning, which makes it quite awkward when you want to sit and have an early morning coffee in these spaces.

CrashPad Jodhpur offers you a comfortable place to sleep in a good location. However, it does not provide you with many extras and certain things that one would take for granted are missing. It is not great value for the money but if you cannot find anything else, it will be an ok place for a few nights.
