The Hostelz.com Review

Cloudcroft Mountain Park Hostel is between Alamogordo and Cloudcroft in New Mexico. It is just northeast of High Rolls. The hostel sign is very eye-catching and visible -- it is an old, round, elevated tube tank with “Hostel” artistically painted on both sides and the end next to the road is finished with a blazing sun. The hostel is located in a very small, isolated valley. It is great for backpackers, people who want to rest, or folks that would like to explore the area. The Wi-Fi works fine for this nonsmoking and no-alcohol facility. Pay by cash at the hostel or by credit card over the internet.

The Location

High Rolls, the community near the hostel, has an elevation of more than six thousand five hundred feet above sea level. Alamogordo, about twelve miles to the west at the bottom of the mountain, is more than four thousand three hundred feet. Cloudcroft, about eight miles to the east, is at more than eight thousand six hundred feet. If supplies or food are required, a selection of stores is located in Alamogordo; Cloudcroft has some stores also. Please be sure to bring your food or plan to drive to one of the nearby towns to eat. If you are planning to hike in the Lincoln National Forest Sacramento District, the ranger station is located at in Cloudcroft. There are many wonderful places to visit nearby if you have transportation, including White Sands National Monument and Lincoln National Forest.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel has five bedrooms with a large number posted on the interior door to denote each room. Each room has two doors -- one door allows access from inside the hostel, and the other door allows access to the exterior long porch with chairs. Rooms One and Two are called private rooms for up to two people in each room and they have a queen-size bed. Room Three is for girls, while Room Four is for boys; each of these rooms have bunk beds. Room Five is a family room that has a queen-size and a bunk bed.

There are two restrooms; one for the boys and one for the girls. Both restrooms are clean and large, with two sinks, many toilets, and several showers with dressing areas.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is open and very usable, with some condiments and a little food that can be used. The kitchen is also stocked with pots, pans, dishes, glasses, and utensils. The electric stove works just fine. One item that needs attention is the refrigerator -- it needs to be cleaned due to some old spillage in it.

The common area is just off of the kitchen. There is a television with a streaming Roku, but we did not use it. Several chairs and couches with tables are in the common area. A large, whimsical fish pillow here is good for starting conversations. A selection of books and puzzles are in the book case. Some dusting on least-used surfaces is needed.

Summary

The owners live on the second floor and are nice people. The check-in is by the front door; the owners may leave your sheets and towels with a note for you, if they are not available. It is a great location for hikers and people that want to get away form the city. The room rates are reasonable. While visiting, we met a nice couple; the husband had been to the hostel earlier that year with a friend and came back with his wife because he had enjoyed his earlier stay and conversions with the owners. We plan to stay here again when back in the area.
