Brier Island Backpackers Reviews

Brier Island Backpackers is a place where you can just relax. It's a laid back hostel which sleeps twelve people and has a really nice view over Westport's harbor. Many tourists come in summer for whale watching but for the rest of the year you will be mostly alone with the approximately two hundred locals on Brier Island.

The Location

The hostel is situated on the "main" junction of Westport and Brier Island, which is the gas station (to get to the Island you will have to take a ferry two times). The owner of the little convenience store is running the hostel, so go into the shop when you want to sign in (if you want to stay longer make sure that you do your shopping in Digby). All the attractions on Brier Island are within walking distance. A whale watching company is in the lower part of the building and the hostel in the upper part. There are no bars or clubs on Brier Island, but a take-away and a restaurant are nearby. There are plenty of walking trails around the island and spots where you can watch the seals and the whales.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The three quad rooms are very good, they have chairs and a table inside and lots of space for luggage. There are free linen, sheets, and towels. Everything is clean and tidy -- the two washrooms (with fairly new shower), the kitchen, and the rooms. Security seems to be good, with a lock at the front door, but there are no locks for the rooms. Since it is an island and all the locals know each other we didn't feel that our belongings where unsafe (all houses are open all the time and they don't even lock their cars).

Common Spaces

The common area is a big room with couches, tables, chairs, and the kitchen. There is a bookshelf and plenty of games so that you do not need a TV. The kitchen is well equipped but there is no free breakfast in the morning. There is an outside sitting area on the other side of the street (sun in the morning) and behind the house with a BBQ (sun in the afternoon). Be aware there is no computer or internet in the hostel and no laundry facilities. But if you need these things there is the Westport laundry and the library with free internet within five minutes' walking distance (check the opening hours in the convenience store).

This hostel is a very good place to have a rest, enjoy the sun, and the nature -- or to wait for a nice day to go out and watch the whales (the best time for whale watching is end of June through September). It is clean and comfy but there is not much to do on the island than hiking, swimming, or sunbathing.

This hostel is wonderful! It is small and very clean and comfortable. You look out over the harbor and see the fishing boats and at times lots of fog, which only adds to the atmosphere. Make sure you hike to the other side of the island to Seal Cove; there were quite a few seals the day I walked over there. I would recommend stocking up on groceries in Digby or somewhere on the mainland if you are planning on cooking. There is a store right next to the hostel but selection is a bit limited. Other then that, go here, you'll love itand all for only $15 per night!
