Kelowna International Hostel Reviews

Party hostel

The Kelowna International Hostel is a beautiful hostel in a colorful house, close to Lake Okanagan. Staff was young, dynamic and helpful, even for me as a late arrival. Visitors beware that it may be a party hostel, most suitable for youngsters and night owls.

Kelowna International Hostel has a super great atmosphere to it, with all of the people floating about, the colourful murals on the walls, and the homey feel.

The Location

Located on the quiet suburban streets of Kelowna, the Kelowna International Hostel is still super close to the downtown area and all of the action. Whatever you need -- whether it be groceries, shopping, or other amenities -- is close at your fingertips. It is quite a way from the Greyhound Station, but if you prearrange it with them, they offer to come and pick you up from the station. If you have arrived by car, there is some street parking available overnight and you will need to ask the staff where the best place to leave your car is.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel is set up like a house and has an amazing atmosphere with the painted walls and corridors. The dorm rooms are spacious and comfortable. They have lockers in each room, which they assign for you to keep all of your stuff and you can secure if you have your own lock. The beds are cozy and have clean fresh linen.

There are two bathrooms, one on the main floor and one in the downstairs floor. The bathrooms are spacious, clean, and they supply floor mats at the door. They also have a take-some/leave-some policy on shampoo and conditioner in case you forget some.

Common Spaces

There is a living room with loads of comfy seating and a television for watching movies right in the reception area. They also have a roomy and well-equipped kitchen that they do free cook your own pancake breakfast in the mornings between 7 to 10 a.m. Outside there is a patio area that has tables and chairs for hanging out outside for a drink or dinner.

Summary

They have a schedule of events on the wall with a different activity for every night of the week including free dinners and movie nights. The staff here are really friendly and helpful and will help answer any questions that you may have about the hostel or what to do within the area. If in Kelowna, this is the place to be; there is an amazing vibe to the hostel and you won't regret your decision to stay here!

Clean but cramped; disproportionately high number of staff to guests

Standard hostel fare. Clean rooms and basic amenities, including free wifi and coffee. Also, it's centrally located -- just 15 min. by foot to downtown Kelowna. I stayed for one Saturday night in mid-April. While I understood there'd be fewer guests due to seasonality (it's the off season here), I felt there was a disproportionately high number of live-in staff to backpackers. The staff numbered closed to 7, while there were only about 10-12 guests staying that particular night. This disproportionateness affected the dynamics of the hostel, such that the staff seemed to have their own private 'club' -- not an unlikely consequence of living in tight confines -- which often dominated the commons area. While the manager was welcoming, the majority of the staff (which was just under half the hostel's occupants that night) didn't seem to give much consideration to the guests. I tried to strike up some conversations with the general group, however, I soon felt like I was intruding on them. Though, the other guests I briefly chatted with were quite nice. Were I to stay here again it most certainly would not be during the off season; again, too few travelers, too many live-ins. Also, the hostel is slightly cramped -- it was only at one-third capacity during my stay. At or near capacity, I imagine it'd be elbow-to-elbow busy. No thanks.

Amazing Set-Up, Comfortable Room

Without sounding like a weirdo, I do think that my enjoyment of the hostel was diminished by the fact that a large portion of the residents where long-time residents over summering to catch some "Powdah." These cool cats were busy reliving the showy, alpha-male/showy female dream and were stagnating. The few real travelers made the place. No knock against them, but a hostel is a place where travelers can find companions to explore with, not a place to be trapped in the same old human dynamic.

This is the best hostel I ever stayed at. We were planning to stay just a couple of days, but after months of travelling this was the first place where we felt at home. So we ended up staying a month and we returned a couple of times. The staff is really friendly and helpfull, just like Crystal, the owner. There is free breakfast, and a lot of parties. There are private rooms and dorms. The hostel is clean and not far from the center. To us, this was not a hostel, but a home. Though it is not a HI hostel, you get a discount with a HI membership card.

I stayed here for 1 month, and loved it so much I asked for a job. That led to 1 year of amazing times, including meeting hundreds of friendly world travellers of all ages and groups. Make sure and meet the owner, Crystal, for a sincere and friendly welcome to Kelowna. It's been over 3 years since I left the hostel, but those memories are still burning bright in my mind, and those friends are still the closest I've made. The Kelowna International Hostel is non-commercial, non-franchise / chain hostel - you will feel like you're staying in a friend's home. They have weekly parties for all guests, and are continually coming up with fun activities for everyone to do. Highly, highly recommended.

I liked it. I've actually stayed here twice. It's out of town but near the beach. The hostel had a cool keg party going on when I arrived, and it was fun just chilling on the veranda. Dorms were nice and clean, too. The common room is ripe for socializing and everyone seems to watch movies in the evening. I would stay here again.

The Kelowna International Hostel is an upbeat fun hostel to stay at. The hostel itself is located on Pandosy street, within walking distance to downtown Kelowna, the waterfront, a grocery store, and the night life. The city bus stops right in front of the hostel.

The hostel is a large house in a residential area of town. They have a large deck with two barbecues for your use. Almost every night there is an activity for hostel guests. We came on a Monday and enjoyed pasta night. A staff member went around and asked everyone if they wanted pasta. They then cooked enough for everyone. They also had movie night the next night with free popcorn! We all sat in the comfy common room and watched videos. The staff made sure that there was lots of popcorn. The common room has a fireplace, which would be nice to snuggle up with a fire and watch a movie on cold winter night. They have a free desert night, birthday night, and others as well. You are guaranteed to get to know your fellow hostellers if you take part in these fun evening activities. The hostel staff will also bake you a cake if you have your birthday during your stay at the hostel!

The murals around the hostel are amazing! The kitchen is very well stocked. They even have bakeware for baking goodies. All the cabinets are labeled with their funky murals on the cabinets. The fridge is a cooler like they have in the stores, so there is never a lack of space in the fridge.

Kelowna is well known for their orchards. Many of the hostelers that were there when we went in September, had gotten jobs at the orchards as apple pickers. If you are looking to make some extra cash while you are at the hostel in the fall be sure to check the board by the office.

The staff will take messages on the payphone that accepts incoming calls. There is affordable internet access on the hostel's internet station. They charge $1/half hour. They also have laundry and they will sell you laundry soap

.

The hostel is well set up and the staff are very knowledgeable and they make your stay enjoyable. By the way, make sure you walk down Pandosy Street to Hector's Authentic Mexican Restaurant for the BEST mexican food ever!
