Kiwi Basecamp Backpackers Reviews

Kiwi Basecamp is kept to an impeccable standard and has very high-quality facilities. Although it's not a party hostel, you'll always find people with which to share a drink and conversation.

The Location

The hostel is located just outside the city centre in a quiet residential area. It's within easy walking distance of various bars and restaurants, but the major supermarkets and bus station are quite far away (about thirty minutes). The airport bus, however, stops nearby.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms were amongst the best we've seen in New Zealand. They had been refurbished a few months before our arrival and still look brand new. The rooms are light and airy with nice carpets. Unfortunately, there are no lockers, but the keypad entry to both the hostel and the room means it is still secure. The beds are just as comfortable as they look in the pictures, with thick mattresses. The frame is also very sturdy, so there's no excessive shaking or squeaking any time your bunkmate moves. Dorms range in size from four to six beds with some en suites and private rooms available.

There are only a handful of bathrooms, but there is never a queue (and the hostel was at capacity during our stay). Like the rest of the hostel, these look brand new and are kept spotless throughout the stay. The shower has very good water pressure (amongst the best we've seen in a hostel) and plenty of hot water. They're in individual rooms, so there's plenty of space to change in private.

Common Spaces

There are four main common areas in the hostel -- a kitchen, a dining room/lounge, the courtyard, and a second lounge. The kitchen is well equipped, with two sets of hobs and ovens, toaster, microwave and grill, along with all the pots/pans/utensils you could need. This is also where you'll find in the morning the complimentary breakfast with homemade bread (though this tends to run out quite quickly, so you need to be early!). The outside lounge is perfect for relaxing in front of the TV while people tend to gather in the dining area in the evenings. The courtyard is great on a sunny day.

Summary

We highly recommend this hostel. The only downside is the location just outside of the centre, but the bus network is easy to use if needed.

Very Very Helpful -- Lovely Hostel

Lovely Hostel, staff very friendly and helpful. Organised this hostel via this site based on other reviews and am very glad that I did. Hostel is clean, with great breakfasts and staff are very helpful and friendly. Hostel is not too big and easy to get to know others staying for more than just one night. Definitely recommend this to others.

Kiwi Basecamp is a small hostel in the heart of Christchurch. It is located on a rather busy street in a two-story wooden building in an area that has lots of accommodation options.

The Location

The hostel is located just north of the city center. Coming from the airport, just take the City Flyer bus to Cathedral Square. From here, it is only a fifteen-minute-walk to get to the hostel. It is easy to find if you have a city map. They will also pick you up at the airport if you advise them in advance and they will drop you back there on departure.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms and bathroom facilities are very clean and tidy -- they are cleaned every day. The rooms have door locks but no indoor lockers. Dorms, most of them with bunk beds, and private rooms are available. The bathrooms are a bit on the small side but sufficient.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is also pretty tidy and only messy at peak times. It is fully equipped and there is a huge fridge which can be used by the guests. In the morning they bake their own bread for breakfast. Free coffee and tea are also provided. There is a TV room to lounge in and computers with internet access and Wireless LAN are both available.

The atmosphere is social and relaxed. You will always meet someone to hang out with in the kitchen or in the common room. It is almost mandatory to cook dinner together in the kitchen. The staff are very friendly and will assist you with your needs. The closest supermarket is quite far away, but the hostel organizes daily supermarket tours -- they will drive you there and back so you don't have to carry your groceries.

Summary

In general, the hostel is reasonably priced and ideally located. It is certainly not the Hilton, but you get what you pay for and it is fun place to meet lots of fellow travelers.

Clean & well looked after, friendly & helpful staff, great bread!!

We stayed in Kiwi Basecamp for a week when we first arrived in NZ. We were collected from the airport, which was great after such long flights. We had a double room, which clean, airy, and spacious. There are 2 kitchens, which helps at 'rush hour' times and the homemade bread every morning was well worth making the extra effort to get out of bed earlier ... before it got totally demolished!! The staff were very friendly and helpful, and I would stay there again.

Shalom Backpackers is close to the city centre of Christchurch, but in a pleasant residential area. The Cathedral Square is fifteen-minute walk away, or you can take a five-minute walk to the Casino and hop on a free shuttle bus. It is also a short walk to Hagley Park, the museum, and the Botanic Gardens, and close to bus routes to the airport and northern beaches.

The hostel is in a two-story house and has a TV lounge and well-equipped kitchen on the ground floor. Out back is a small courtyard with a hammock, and a sauna is available in the evenings for a small charge. The Japanese owners keep the hostel in a clean condition.

You can hire a yukata (Japanese bathrobe) with geta (shoes) and kinchaku (bag), or a kimono (traditional full-length Japanese gown). A mah-jong (Chinese gambling game) set is also available to borrow at a small charge for up to three hours and other games are also available.

There is a guest phone in the kitchen on an honesty basis. You will be asked for photo ID when checking in, and will need to have cash ready for your stay plus refundable key deposit as there is no eftpos or credit card facility. If you check out after 10 a.m., you may lose your key deposit. Discounted rates are offered for long-term stays.

Perfect location but smelt strongly of smoke and bathrooms were a bit sticky.

Good response to questions about booking, and easy to access on late arrival with code.

Staff was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately one of the roommates in our dorm was very conflicted and aggressive, but the staff quickly changed us to another dorm. Otherwise nice place, clean and tidy.

It was a good stay for location and price. But there is only one toilet for the whole upstairs floor and there was never any toilet paper?! Painfully basic oversight. Stayed three days//two nights and this was recurring - not a one off!!

Also the bed was horribly uncomfortable resulting in poor sleep for me.

Staff were really lovely though. But I soooo cant overlook not sleeping well (bed and noise) and having to search entire hostel for toilet paper every day I stayed there!

Location was good, but the level of cleanliness let this place down. The shower was mouldy, toilet filthy and kitchen needed a good clean. Wouldnt stay here again.

Hostel had good facilities although the shared bathrooms were needing a clean. Main let down was the location right next to a really noisy main road so didn't get much of a rest. Not the end of the world but we were using the hostel as a stop over between long drives so it was disappointing.

Liked: Two kitchens so plenty of space to cook. Really nice outdoor/garden area for having drinks/eating/playing board games or giant jenga etc. Plenty of spices/seasoning on offer to jazz up a plain meal. The people there long term made the place feel really homely. Didn't like: Reception didn't advise of anything on offer/to do in Christchurch and didn't advise she was happy to help- didn't seem like she wanted to. Also didn't advise about anything to do with check out. We stayed for 3 nights and had different people in the dorm each night and not once was the duvet cover washed- only the sheets and pillow case- tad unhygienic!

Liked: Free freshly baked bread (although not available until later than most backpackers would have their breakfast). Didn't like: Very noisy - even the person at reception after hours (pretty late - after lights out) was very noisy when letting a guest in.

Liked: I really liked it here! As promised they serve self baked bread every morning. Furthermore they provide towels. It's really useful, if you have to pack your bag and don't want to stuff your own wet towel in it. The hostel staff is like a little family. Didn't like: The beds are a bit squeaky and some of the lockers underneath the bed are damaged.
