Great staff, airy rooms, good kitchens & common rooms, closed 10A - 4P
I have stayed in many hostels across Europe and Scotland, and Backpackers Lucerne is one of the best in terms of beds (comfortable and only 4 in a room), room facilities (bed light, key-locker, desk, French door to a balcony facing the lake), sinks in the hall, and close-by toilets and showers. The staff is friendly and informative, the kitchens are practical, the common rooms are the dining rooms, and the whole place is clean and neat. The only drawback is the 10AM-4PM closed reception, since that is when many of us arrive. When you find whoever is working at that time, s/he will open the luggage room to store your pack until check-in, but there is no-one for local information until 4PM. There is a Migros grocery store close by on a foot path. Another bonus is that if you book your transportation to Mt. Pilatus here, it is CF20 less. Every little bit helps! I would definitely stay here when back in Lucerne. Get to the hostel by walking along the lake -- no need for the busy roads!

Good facilities but quite expensive
The hostel has good facilities and a large dining room and clean beds. The rooms are nice and most have a view toward the lake. However, there was not specific 'common area' or place to meet other travelers. you had to rely on the kitchen and eating areas to do that. Besides that Lucerne hostel is a little way out of the town, but no big deal if you are fit. the 15min walk shouldn't be an issue if you are used to carrying your pack around for some time. The Hostel asks for a lot of information and in my opinion is overpriced -- but so is everything in Switzerland. The facilities cannot be complained about and the rooms are clean and staff are nice enough.
Fantastic place to stay -- solo, friends, family, or even business!!
This is my 3rd time back at this hostel. I come to Lucerne often for seminars (I am a PhD student, and my supervisor is based at Uni Lucerne). I generally do not write reviews during my frequent travels, but this place is terrific! The staff is cheerful, helpful and courteous, the rooms are ALWAYS clean and the beds are so comfortable. I really love that every room has a balcony and the lake is right across the street. Also, there are heaps of magazines, games etc..a nice touch and amusement for those dreaded 'rainy' days. For my last trip to Lucerne my employer told me just to choose a hotel, so I decided to be adventurous and go with a a much more expensive "theme" hotel. Never again. Although I could choose almost any place I wish, I always chose to stay here now. For less than half the price of other accommodation I get lightning speed wifi, a spotless restroom and shower (which the other one certainly didn't provide) , a desk to work from (didn't have that either- a MUST for me), comfort and ALWAYS a smile when I head out to work at the Uni. Simply great! If you come to beautiful Lucerne (as everyone should once or twice), make this your place to stay! You won't regret it!
Friendly and helpful staff, good condition and management
I was upgraded from a room of 4 to a room of 2. I love the location. It is right at the lakeside. At least 15 to 20 minutes of walk from the train station if you know the route and do not need to ask someone on the way. The showers and toilets are very clean, just outside the room, no need to walk a long distance. Many of us cook in the small kitchen. The only shortcoming is that no free breakfast is provided. I love the hostel and would certainly recommend it to all other backpackers on a budget.

This was my first time staying in a hostel. Backpackers Lucerne was simply amazing! It was very clean and tidy. The staff at the front desk was always very helpful ... all four of them. The hostel is located right by Lake Lucerne and it is simply beautiful. There are two kitchens so you can cook since Switzerland is very expensive. It is a 20 minute walk from the train station to the hostel so make sure you buy some groceries at the train station before you start walking.
Clean; kid friendly; great local information; wonderful owner, Marc
A beautiful walk along the lake and boat docks into town -- it only seems a little far away from the center the first time then it's an easy and interesting walk. We visited with our two grandsons ages 8 and 10 and they had a great time there too. They loved the little boxes of super sugared American cereal that can be bought there for breakfast -- they live in French Switzerland and have nothing like that there. Our room had a terrace and view out over the park and the lake -- it was very chilly in January so we only looked through the glass doors but we look forward to returning in a warmer season. Yes there are rules but I loved that. No one wants to cook in a dirty kitchen or shower with a floor flooded with water -- don't understand why people would complain about this. The staff spoke amazing English and Marc (Mark?) the owner was especially nice and helpful. This was our first time traveling with the grandkids and staying in a hostel and it was a great experience. After 2 more cities -- Bern and Zurich and 2 more Backpackers the Lucerne Backpackers still gets all our stars.

Backpackers Lucerne offers great accommodation, great prices, and a wonderful location. Be prepared for several rules and restrictions during your stay -- they are intended to improve everyone's stay but they can be a bit inhibiting. The Location Situated right on the water, Backpackers is a ten-minute walk to the train station and a thirteen-minute walk to the Old Town. The hostel is also within easy walking distance of two grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants. Rooms and Bathrooms This hostel has several rooms, many with a terrace, all with community showers and bathrooms. Each room is equipped with lockers with assigned keys. Be aware that the rooms do not lock and the larger bags don't fit into the locker. The beds are nice, with linens provided and towels for rent. The lighting in the room is poor with few bed lights -- if you read at night, you should bring a book light. Also, there are few plug-ins in the rooms and lobby area. If you need to charge something be sure to grab a seat early and share with those around you. Each hallway shares two showers and one male and one female toilet, however, there is rarely a wait for either. They also have extra sinks and mirrors in the hall for you to do your quick cleaning and primping before heading out to see the beautiful city. Common Spaces Backpackers has two fully equipped kitchens (one oven), fondue pots, and plenty of seating. The atmosphere is very relaxed with people lounging around taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi, book exchange, or community games and puzzles. There is always someone available during the day at the desk but you may have to hunt them down while they are cleaning or doing laundry. The laundry service is a reasonable price, especially considering they do it all for you. Since the cost of eating out is so expensive everyone tends to cook their dinners and surprisingly there never seems to be a line, everyone works well together, bringing a family atmosphere into the rooms. They have bikes and rollerblades for rent on nice days and towels to rent if you want to lay out by the water. Wi-Fi is free and they have one computer available for internet use for a small fee. Summary The staff are very helpful when planning your day trips and have good, money-saving suggestions for those on a tight budget. They also can offer nicer options for those who want to treat themselves to a good Swiss meal or chocolate. They prefer you pay in cash when you arrive but you can pay with a card for an extra fee.
Won't find better!
This is an excellent hostel. It is very well run and well equipped. The staff are very friendly and happy and always willing to help. The dorms have lockers, the beds don't squeak, the shower has plenty of hanging space, and the entire hostel is kept extremely clean. The location is fantastic with all rooms having a balcony, the lake is straight across the road. I've never stayed in a better run hostel -- the staff and owners should be very proud.
