Labrish Guest House is Jamaican-/Japanese-owned and is one of the cheaper hostels in Kingston.
The Location
Just a five-minute walk from Half Way Tree bus station, Labrish is very handy if you're in transit and want to stay a night and move on. There are numerous shops in the area and dozens of eateries. It's down a side street, so isn't plagued by traffic noise, but the owners' yapping dogs do their best to compensate as do the locals and their sound systems!
Rooms and Bathrooms
This very basic place has a male and a female dorm. The male dorm has four single beds with mattresses of varying quality. The dorm is fan-cooled and there are mini-safes for your valuables. There is a bedside table of sorts between each bed and a couple of power points. The bathroom is also very basic. Among the peeling paint and cracked tiles, guests will find a hot water shower. The shower head is, however, mounted so low on the wall that you have to stoop to get your hair wet! The toilet is a tiny, shabby wooden shed and the whole bathroom is only partially curtained off from the dorm. There are also a number of private rooms at the back of the property. These look decent with the rooms having, at worst, a tea station and, at best, a kitchen with electric hob and a TV. Most of the rooms are fan-cooled, but a couple are air conditioned.
Common Spaces
There is a swimming pool in the front garden, but the owner's dogs use the surrounds for leaving little messages. Be careful when going barefoot! There are some wooden sun loungers and tables and chairs around the pool. The house has a veranda, which leads into the sitting room (no shoes, please). This sitting room also becomes the breakfast room as breakfast is included in the price. However, breakfast isn't served until 10 a.m.! There is a kitchen with a kettle, rice cooker, and a few other things scattered almost randomly about the place. It's none too clean, either. There is free Wi-Fi here available throughout the house though, and it has a pretty good signal.
Summary
This could be a nice place if a bit of work were put into it, but the owners have just let it go. The location means that it's a fair choice if you arrive late or want an early get away from Kingston, as it's so close to Half Way Tree bus station. The private rooms are much better than the dorms, but there is a problem with insects here. Flies, mosquitoes, ants, and cockroaches all make appearances. Labrish is a grubby place with peeling and dirty paint, cracked tiles, and dangling wires. It's cheaper than the other hostels in Kingston, but you get what you pay for here -- not much.
