Helmsdale Hostel Reviews

I stayed in Helmsdale several times over a three week period as I traveled to Orkney, Latheron, and Thurso in the far north of Scotland in July 2006. The Helmsdale Hostel was by far the nicest place to stay in Helmsdale and the best hostel of the three I experienced in Scotland.

The hostel location is very convenient to the bus, train, walking destinations as well as the post office, library, grocery stores, and the Timespan Museum and Garden Cafe. The hostel is spacious, clean, well organized, and newly spiffed up with a large kitchen area, plenty of comforable chairs and a wood stove for those cool Scottish nights. The hostel owner, Irene, is friendly and welcoming. I'm hoping to visit again.

Helmsdale Hostel Reviews from the Web

Liked: The location was good because it was close to the bus stop. There are no bunkbeds. Free tea and coffee.  Disliked: 10-5 lockout but wasn't really enforced. Makes you feel unwelcome. It was always cold because there was no heating until after 5 which was when the hostel opened. When we asked what there was to do around town we were told there was nothing. There are are few walks which we found at helmsdale.org.

Liked: Helmsdale is a 'wee gem'. Very cosy and comfortable, with a lovely home-from-home feel thanks to the friendly hostel staff. The village is very welcoming and Timespan a historical eye-opener. Big blue sky. Yellow broom. What a refreshing experience! I'll be back. Thanks again for the home-baking and your wonderful zest for life.  Disliked: Carry left no negative feedback.

Liked: More character than a lot of hostels.  Disliked: No parking at all! Needs a small offroad car / motorbike park as the only area is on chips at the front door through the gate!
