From the street, Abby By The River looks like it could be expensive and upmarket. The reception area is clean, tidy, and modern with black-and-red sofas. The place really looks great ... until you take the elevator to the bedrooms.
The Location
The location is great, as it's a short walk to the Old Town and Little India, and of course it's right next to the bridge, crossing the river. The building is easy to find, as it's on the corner with a very large sign.
Rooms and Bathrooms
We have to use our key card (for which we paid a deposit) to open the bedroom door and then insert that key card into a slot to provide electricity in the room. The bedroom is of a fair size, with sturdy metal-frame beds, comfortable mattresses, and pillows. We always appreciate staying at a place that has little curtains in front of the beds, but in this case it's terrible -- the curtains are dirty and half the hooks are missing. The bedroom floor is filthy, which is surprising, as housekeeping should have just finished cleaning before we checked in. Each bed has a reading light and electric socket. The air conditioner is a welcome sight, as it can be extremely hot outside. Under each bottom bunk is a locker big enough to fit all your luggage -- you need your own lock.
The room is right next to the elevator and the constant ding-dong bell from the elevator is very frustrating. The passage is dirty and clearly hasn't been cleaned for a while. There is a water dispenser in the passage, providing hot and cold water. This is a welcome feature, except that it's filthy and definitely hasn't been cleaned for ages, so we're most certainly not risking our lives drinking from it. There are cigarette butts everywhere and the smell of smoke lingers in the passage and bathroom.
There are two toilets and showers on the floor and they are both dirty; we're reluctant to use the bathroom facilities as they are just terrible. The shower has hot water and a soap dispenser. We found cigarette butts in the toilet and on the basin.
Common Spaces
The reception area room is not for socializing, it's merely a place to check-in and check-out. The sofas here look modern and add a certain style to the room -- but don't sit down, as they are rock hard! They are meant for decor only, not for use. There is a computer for the guests use and the Wi-Fi is fast. Water and cold drinks are for sale in a fridge. On the rooftop there is a social area, where it's possible to see over the city and take beautiful photos of the bridge and river. In the reception area, we saw a notice that breakfast (toast and jam) is available at the Roof Top Cafe, but we didn't see any sign of breakfast, coffee, or tea.
Summary
Our stay was not good and we couldn't check out fast enough. The place looks like it hasn't been cleaned for a while. We wouldn't recommend this hotel until they make some serious changes.

• Aman Jaya Bus Terminal
• You can take a taxi directly to our hotel or board a local bus (116) which will take you to Medan Kidd bus station. From there exit the bus station and start heading left following the pathway till you see the traffic light and cross the road to the opposite blue and white building which is the police station. After that still heading left, follow the path beside the police station till you reach the end of the path and turn right. From there just walk all the way straight. You will pass by one traffic light, Kok Kin Photography and Color Lab, a park and finally a bridge. Our hotel will be on your left after the bridge end.

• Exit the train station and head straight towards the park. There will a white building (mosque) opposite the park and cross over to it. Turn right after u cross to the mosque and walk along the path till you reach end of the path. Turn left after that and go straight all the way to our hotel. Along the way you will pass by a traffic light, Kok Kin Photography and Color Lab and finally a bridge. Our hotel will be at the end of the bridge.
