A stay at A&O Aachen Hauptbahnhof feels a lot like having a dorm in a hotel.

The Location

The hostel is just in front of the central train station of Aachen and is very easy to find. We could walk to the historic city center in under ten minutes. There are a lot of shops around the area for all our needs. The trains make this location very noisy with the windows open.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are no large dorms at this location, as most of the building is private rooms. We stayed in a four-bed dorm. The room has no lockers, but free ones are available at the front desk. Aside from that, it is well equipped with a bathroom, coat hangers, bedside tables, and large windows but no reading lights. The sheets cost extra, so we used our sleeping bags. The bathroom has free soap and seems modern, fairly clean, and nice -- although it is not cleaned everyday (only when needed). The daily cleaning includes changing checked-out beds and a quick floor sweep. The rooms are decently clean, but still there are stains on the walls and on the mattress. Checkout is at 10 a.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on weekends.

Common Spaces

The lounge is a hotel lobby with seats. There is a twenty-four-hour hotel bar with snacks and a pool table that costs a fortune. There is a cash machine, coffee machine, and cigarette machine in the lobby. The hostel has a parking. A very expensive hotel breakfast is served from 7 to 10 a.m. every day. There is a guest kitchen in a small room in the basement, with two stovetops, a microwave, few dishes, a small fridges, and cooking oil. There must be at least a hundred rooms and we were the only ones to use the kitchen. You need to ask at the reception for the kitchen key, and there is a cash deposit for the kitchen card. This hostel is not the place to meet new people -- it feels very much like a hotel where guests keep to themselves. The common areas are kept very tidy and clean.

Summary

Everything you expect from a hostel is there, except the good vibes and nice people.

Location

• Walking/Main station:
• From the train stations main exit follow the narrow Hacklaenderstrasse to your right. After just 90 meters you will directly face our A&O Hotel.
• By plane:
• From Maastricht/Aachen-Airport please use the bus 59 (direction Maastricht), up to Meerssen, Station Veolia, then the train Stoptrein (direction Kerkrade Centrum) up to Landgraaf and finally the train RB 11919 (direction Dueren) which will take you directly to Aachen main station. From there please follow the description 'walking/main station'.
• By car:
• No matter from which direction you come from, you will be driving on the A4 or A44 shortly before arriving in Aachen. From there follow the A544 5.9 km.
• At the roundabout take the second exit (B1). Please turn left onto the Juelicher Strasse. After 500 meters turn left onto Heinrichsallee/B264. Keep right and continue one's drive to Hacklaenderstrasse.
• Take the first junction to the right. The hotel is located on the right hand side.
