Freddie next to Mercury Reviews

Freddie next to Mercury is a good, lower-budget option for Bratislava. It's outside the tourist center but close enough to walk, and it offers good value for the price.

The Location

Freddie next to Mercury, though not in Old Town, has a convenient location for exploring Bratislava. It’s on a side street just off a larger road, and with no prominent markings, it’s easy to miss. The hostel is a five-minute walk from the main train station and about fifteen minutes on foot to the historic town center. The main bus station is on the other side of the city, but the public transportation system is good and inexpensive. A few small markets are close by to the hostel, with larger supermarkets only a fifteen-minute walk away. There are a few restaurants near the hostel, too, though the vast majority are in the town center. Because the hostel is not in the town center, you can escape from the touristy feel of Old Town.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The doors to the room open with a key that can be a bit difficult to work, and the door does not lock automatically, so guests are at the mercy of their roommates as far as room security goes. The rooms are clean enough, though not immaculate. There is a mix of bunks and single beds, with no lockers (lockers are available on the first floor), but enough outlets for everyone. The rooms have enough space to feel comfortable, and include dressers and small tables and plenty of windows. There is also a small kitchenette in the room with two burners, a kettle, a small refrigerator, and a sink (no microwave or toaster). A small assortment of plates, cups, utensils are provided, along with a couple of pots and pans. It's enough for a very basic meal, though nothing that invites much cooking.

The room has its own bathroom with a toilet and shower. The bathroom is spacious enough, though without shelves or even a single hook, showering and getting ready can be a bit of a challenge. The shower is old but functional; the water pressure and temperature are decent.

Common Spaces

The common areas at Freddie’s are decent, though not great. There is a small sitting area off the reception and a small outdoor area where guests can sit. The hostel also has a small deck for guests. Guests sometimes hang out in these areas, though there isn’t a lot of socializing, especially since the rooms are pretty self-contained. There is an elevator to access the higher floors.

There is a kitchen on the first level, too, that is also quite small, but it has the essentials (including a microwave) for making a quick meal. In the kitchen, the hostel also offers free coffee and tea all day. Breakfast is served in the kitchen for a fee. It consists of sliced meats and cheese, bread, cereal, juice, tea, and coffee. It’s adequate, though a better breakfast can be found elsewhere in town. One bonus is that the hostel offers free use of its washing machine.

Freddie next to Mercury offers an option for lodging near the center of Bratislava that is lower-budget but that doesn’t require much sacrifice as far as the basics. With free Wi-Fi throughout the building, a kitchenette in each room, and a comfortable though quiet feel, it’s a good place to spend a couple of nights while in Bratislava.

Not as advertised

Here is a quote from the description. "Each rooms has its own bathroom and toilet, kitchenette with basin, stove and minibar (fridge), kettle, TV, and lockable cabinets." My 4 bed dorm didn't have a kitchenette, stove, kettle, tv, or lockable cabinet. There was a common kitchen available but there were no lockers anywhere. The wifi was good. Just a normal dorm room with a bathroom attached. Close to the central station, about 5-10 minute walk.
