M Hostel Seminyak

The Hostelz.com Review

M hostel is one of the few hostels available in Seminyak. It's cheap by Seminyak standards and very social, but not quite convincing.

The Location

The hostel is located in Seminyak, on a very chaotic road, nearby a supermarket, and surrounded by shops and restaurants. The beach is a twenty-minute walk from the hostel. The building itself may be a bit tricky to find at first, as it is located behind a drugstore and you must go through it to be able to get to the hostel itself. There is also a back entrance.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms, as do everything in this hostel, seem great at first -- they're spacious and stylish, have large beds, bed light, and power sockets. But once you scratch the surface, it isn't all that good. The walls are painted dark grey, which initially looks cool, but actually makes the whole place very dark at all times. The lights in the rooms are also very dim. The walls are extremely thin, which means you can literally hear everything people say in the other rooms. Thin walls also mean the rooms are very humid -- even more so in the rainy season. Power sockets are not all safe -- one person in the room got electrocuted. The dorms are six beds each, no bunk beds, so there's more space and a little wall to separate you from the others. Dorms are either female or male only.

The bathrooms are also separated between male and female. The showers are very big with ample space to hang your clothes without risk of it getting wet. The same issues exist here as in the dorms -- they're humid and dark. Toilet paper is not always available and the toilets are often forgotten by the cleaning staff.

Common Spaces

There is a TV and computer room available to all guests, with comfy couches, free movies, and a water dispenser (don't drink from the tap). Internet is available and it's free.

There is also an outdoor area, which is probably the best part of the hostel. There you can sit on beanbag chairs, have a drink with other backpackers and watch the stars, or hide under the roof and sit at the big table. Free breakfast is available in the dining room/outdoor area every morning and consists of eggs (one each, cooked to order), toasts, fruit, and tea or coffee. The hostel does get crowded and is a very good place to meet friendly people.

It is ok for a couple of nights, and probably one of the best hostels to meet backpackers in Seminyak.

Lots of common space, helpful staff, good price, close to the action
I stayed in the 6 person male dorm for a few nights in August 2013. I started with two nights here and ended up extending my stay several days. There are a variety of places to hang out, including an indoor dining room, covered outdoor picnic tables, outdoor beanbag chairs and indoor AC lounge. As a result, I found it very easy to meet other travelers, though of course that also depends on the individuals present at the time. Breakfast is eggs, toast, coffee, tea, watermelon and papaya, which I thought was decent for an included hostel breakfast. The desk manager is very friendly and helpful; he helped me numerous times providing suggestions on where to grab some cheap eats and what certain prices "should" be, so I was more informed for bargaining. The furnishings are nice, but there are cement floors throughout which some might find dingy. The dorm doors are very difficult to close quietly since the latch (controlled by key card) needs a bit of a shove. People complained to me that they found it noisy but it's not so much the hostel as it is your drunken roommates that are at fault. Suggested areas of improvement -- There are no towels at any of the sinks. Not a big deal but drip drying my hands or drying them on my clothes wears thin after a while. The locks on the cupboards below each bed are a little finicky. Mine eventually stopped working so I just locked stuff in my pack. That said, while I was here, they hauled in a new safe so one can always make use of that at the front desk. Overall I really enjoyed my stay here and would stay here again thanks to the helpful staff and abundant hangout spots. Pro tip -- If you are arriving late, you are still supposed to be able to get access thanks to the night guard. The street entrance for this hostel is through a pharmacy which closes at 11, but none of the signs direct you to how to access the back door. I had to hunt around for the door at 3am because the guard who was supposed to be at the front was either missing or sleeping. Basically, from the front door (pharmacy and Mario Silver) head north past the Bintang Supermarket and turn left down the first alley. Then take your next left and you'll see the back gates a couple doors down.
