Dirty McNasty's Hostel

The Hostelz.com Review

Dirty McNasty's is a work in progress -- the owners have ambitious plans for this place and once completed it should be great. At the moment though with the construction of a third building adjacent to the dorms disrupting your lie-in at 8 a.m., maybe you should save this place for your next visit to the island.

The Location

Two blocks from the beach, and five- to ten-minute walk from the "split" (a peninsula by the beach where people hang out all day swimming, snorkeling, and drinking) -- Dirty McNasty's is excellently located. The two-minute walk to the beachfront leads you to an array of restaurants, dive shops, and souvenir stores, along with a number of convenience stores.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel features cabin-style accommodation over two stories; each cabin has three wooden bunk beds with built-in lockers. The two fans work tirelessly to relieve the stuffiness of the rooms, but to no avail -- the rooms are like a sauna during the day. The bathrooms are en suite and perfectly adequate. Showers do supply hot water on demand, but at low pressure.

Common Spaces

The three buildings are set up as four sides of a square, with the fourth being the road. At the centre, we are told they are planning on putting a swimming pool, but as it stands the area is just sand, only populated by a couple of tables.

Upstairs in the opposite building to the dorms is a large room featuring three pool tables, although only one is playable. At the side of this room is the kitchen with some of the most disgusting rusty cutlery ever to frequent any hostel. There is a fridge, a couple of stoves, and enough facilities to rustle up something basic. The "free breakfast" is simply coffee, bread, and do-it-yourself eggs. On the balcony there is a small space to hang out, along with five hammocks.

Once completed, Dirty McNasty's should be one of the main players on the Caye Caulker circuit. At the time of writing, however, there are still a number of kinks to iron out. Significantly more expensive than its rivals, Dirty McNasty's doesn't yet have the facilities to justify that price differential. Give them time, though, and in a couple of years, this place could be a real gem.

Very bad experience
On the surface, the place is not that terrible. It is a good place to meet fellow backpackers, and the rooms are ok. But there are a number of things going wrong. A construction site in the middle of it, where a disgusting pond is breeding grounds for mosquitoes, so expect noise and plenty of bites. And if you consider that for the same price there are a number of other much better places in the island, it is not even value for money. To make things worse, the lockers they provide are rubbish. I trusted them, got a lock and put my valuables in them. But $200+ US were stolen, since actually, one only needs to lift the mattress to have free access to the "locker." After this I spoke with the staff, who acted in a defensive and unhelpful manner. They didn't want to take any responsibility for it. Given that the only people that went to my room were the cleaning staff, is hard not to suspect of them. Plainly, if I hadn't been offered a locker I'd be much better off. And they don't give a damn. I wrote to the owner, who instead of apologizing and trying to make up for it, just asked me not to give them a bad review. Shows a lot of class.
Still here ...
Was supposed to stay for two nights, it's day seven now. Excellent friendly staff who work with a local guide Pops, who will take groups on tours to the reef to see sharks and manatees and go spear fishing, he's also an absolute legend! The hostel might not be prettiest to look at and the cheaper rooms don't have air con, but the breakfast is excellent and the free rum punch always gets a crowd together for a night out. Such a good atmosphere, I just hope I'll be able to get out of here and continue my travels.

Give the dog 'Ben' some love
The stay in this hostel was fine. Clean, friendly staff, free rum and punch at 19:00 and breakfast. There is a dog tied up underneath the hostel 24/7. The owner of the dog lives in the hostel (so has got nothing to do with the hostel). The owner doesn't feed the dog and you can tell that he has been abused. The owner says that Ben is a mean dog to people and other dogs. This is not truth at all! He is very sweet and scared for other dogs. I walked Ben for 6 days and fed him twice a day. I gave him a worm and flea treatment. Every day he seemed happier and got back his confidence bit by bit. Hopefully I set a trend and other backpackers will feed and walk him as well! I know you can't save them all, but hopefully we can save Ben with a little bit of love and effort.
