Good place
Had everything we needed including pool.
Most travelers have a great time at El Viajero Cali Hostel & Salsa School, chilling by the pool during the day and downing cocktails in the bar in the evenings in the hostel's excellent communal areas. This soon takes a sour twist, however, when mysterious additional costs and payment fees emerge on your bill at checkout and you leave feeling like you have just been fleeced.
The Location
Located in the San Antonio district of Cali, El Viajero Hostel is in one of the better neighbourhoods of Cali. In spite of this, is it always recommended to take a taxi between sights, even in the day. The Iglesia de San Antonio, one of the city's main tourist sights is around a ten-minute walk away up the hill.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The eight-bed dorms are very cramped, with very little room for moving around. The beds are pretty poor and not very comfortable. The mattresses are thin and cheap and bound by plastic sheeting. You are expected to make your own bed using the old covers that they provide. Although there are fans in the room, they are not adequate to keep you cool, especially if you want a nap during the day. The showers are next to the pool and deliver hot water; free shower gel is provided.
Common Spaces
The common spaces, on the other hand, are excellent. The main space -- around the pool -- is cleaned daily; there are a number of sun loungers, deck chairs, and seats that are ideal for relaxing. Alongside is the bar area, where the free breakfast is served daily between 8 and 10 a.m. Drinks in the bar are extortionate, however, and some of the cocktails are more expensive than in some of the local bars. There is a TV room and outside can be found three hammocks, and two communal computers that are free to use. Free salsa classes are held daily; private classes are available at additional cost.
Summary
El Viajero attracts a friendly type of backpacker and has excellent communal facilities. It is just a shame that most guests leave feeling like they have been a little conned following the extra drinks charges and "payment fees." Our advice would be to pay in cash for all drinks and avoid a tab at the bar (we did this, but still they tried to charge us for drinks at the end anyway). Also make sure you get a receipt when you pay for the room. If you ignore this unpleasant element, the hostel becomes a good option for relaxing and enjoying your stay in Salsa City.
