Bella's Backpackers

The Review

Don't stay at Bella's Backpackers unless you have no other feasible alternative. The official website for the hostel preaches many activities and amenities that do not actually happen. They don't have any staff, either, which means most of the time there is nobody there to check you in or tend to guest requests.

The Location

Bellas is strategically located on the island of Caye Caulker, Belize. As this is a small island, the hostel is within a short distance to all amenities as well a short walk from the "split," a popular relaxing spot during the day.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms and bathrooms at Bellas are rundown at best. The beds and sheets look to be many years old and are covered in stains and tears. The bed frames are rotting and many of them are broken or breaking. The rooms are cleaned thoroughly each day, but due to the state of the hostel, the cleaning staff cannot keep up with the demand for cleaning. The screens in the windows are either entirely ripped out or have many holes, making guests an easy target for the mosquitoes.

There are four public bathrooms throughout the hostel -- two inside the house and two outside on the lawn. The toilets have little power so they clog easily; the sinks in two of the bathrooms have been ripped out of the wall, so you must change bathrooms in order to wash your hands. The showers are freezing and have mold growing all around them.

Common Spaces

The one plus of Bellas is the large and very social common areas. The kitchen is decently equipped with enough burners to have a few meals cooking at once. The kitchen, however, is often crammed at meal times due to the high volume of guests. The front lawn is a nice area to relax and socialize due to the multiple chairs, picnic tables, and hammocks.

The owner and operator of the hostel has a reputation for making female guests here uncomfortable with constant aggressive and inappropriate sexual advances. Not only did we observe this during our stay, with some female guests in tears and looking for somewhere else to stay in the middle of the night, but we also heard of this from many other travelers on the road. It is not recommended for any woman to stay here ever, as he does not respect women, especially if they are independent solo travelers and regardless of whether they are taken or not.
