Bella's Backpackers lies on beautiful Caye Caulker, an island off the coast of Belize. The hostel has a very laid-back but neglected atmosphere. The management seems equally laid-back and thus the place is in a place of constant (dis)repair.
The Location
Bella's Backpackers is located in a lively neighborhood on Caye Caulker. It is on a side street on a property bordering the mangroves on the back side of the island. It is only a ten-minute walk from the water taxi and within easy walking distance of supermarkets and restaurants. There is another large hostel opposite with lots of foot traffic.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms do not have air conditioning and only one fan for up to eight beds. There are both bunk beds and mattresses on the floor, with the latter often found in the loft area of some dorms. Some of the windows have mosquito screens while others have none; bug repellant spray is a must. The dorm room has an en suite bathroom with a toilet and a nonworking wash basin -- washing hands and brushing your teeth has to happen in the outdoor sink of the kitchen. There are good-sized lockers in the dorms (bring a lock) and a couple of electrical outlets. Rooms are not locked and there are both private and air-conditioned rooms available.
There are two rustic showers in the backyard outside with “cold” (more like lukewarm) water coming out of conches attached to a hose (causing the weak water pressure). Only the floor or the door of the shower stall are available for putting down clothes and things while showering.
Common Spaces
The main common space is a kitchen/dining area on the first floor with stairs leading to the backyard dock and to the front of the property. At least two dorms are accessed directly through the kitchen. Furthermore there are plenty of hammocks strung up throughout the property. A small book exchange with more than twenty-five books can also be found in the kitchen. This is not a party hostel but very social and a great place to mingle and get talking to fellow travelers. The overall noise level in and around the dorms (including blasting music) and the stifling heat in the dorms is not conducive to sleeping though. You can borrow a canoe for free and paddle around the island at your leisure. Additionally the Wi-Fi works well throughout the property.
Summary
This is a laid-back hostel with a social atmosphere that could use some work.

• From bus station or Airport in Belize city:
• take taxi or walk to either ocean ferry or San Pedro Belize Express. When arriving on Caye Caulker make left off of water taxi bridge
• merge into front street. When you see 'De Real Macaw' make next left (Crocodile street). Hostel on right at end of street across from Dirty McNasty.
• It is 5 min walk from ferry terminal. Once you exit the ferry, turn right & 3 streets down you will see our sign, turn left here and you will see us located down the street on the right.
