Candelos Hostel

The Review

You are always greeted with a warm welcome at Candelos Hostel. Despite being less-aesthetically-pleasing than some of its competitors, Candelos compensates by being cheap and homey.

The Location

Located in the centre of La Candelaria (the old town) of Bogotá, Candelos Hostel is just a short walk from everything. The trans-milenio bus stop, a local supermarket, bars and restaurants, and the main tourist sights are no more than ten minutes' walk away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are very basic. Dorms cram two wooden bunk beds into a confined space with only about two feet of headroom on the top bunk. The mattresses are reasonable without being incredibly comfy. There isn't much room for luggage. Sturdy metal lockers are available upstairs however and are big enough to big a daybag. You need to provide your own padlock. Separate bathrooms are available and the hot water at good pressure is a nice surprise. These, along with all other areas in the hostel, are cleaned daily.

Common Spaces

The roof terrace is small, but given the size of the hostel, perfectly adequate to house all the guests. There is a bar up there and on some weekends it can get pretty lively. This is great if you want to party, but the noise is easily translated to the private rooms below, meaning that without earplugs you may spend the night listening to the footsteps from the floor above.

On the first floor is a TV room with a number of comfy couches and alongside is a dining table with a couple of chairs. Just at the side is a communal computer with internet access. The dorms also open out to a small reception style area that can house a small group. The kitchen is basic but will serve the purpose. There is a cooker with six hobs and a fridge. Strangely enough we could find lots of knives and spoons but no forks, and unless you are on a serious diet, the size of the plates will not be adequate for your portion sizes.

Candelos is not one of the most famous hostels in Bogotá, but its cheap price still attracts a decent crowd. Unlike some of the main drags, Candelos seems to appeal more to Colombian travelers, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your level of Spanish. If you're on a tight budget, it is worth a night or two; if not, there are plenty of excellent hostels only a block or two away.
