Zebra Crossing Backpacker Lodge Reviews

Zebra Crossing Lodge is a hostel in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Location

Zebra Crossing Lodge is located in Cape Town's city centre, only three minutes walking from Long Street, which is Cape Town's party street with many bars, restaurants, and clubs. Zebra Crossing Lodge is about two kilometres away from the long distance bus and railway station and the same distance from the foot of Table Mountain and Lion's Head. There is a parking facility next to the hostel. There are many sights worth seeing in walking distance from the hostel. Although it is close to Long Street, the area around the hostel is safe. When entering the hostel you need to pass two gates, which you can open with the code you get on arrival. Security at this hostel is very good.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Zebra Crossing Lodge offers both dorms and private rooms. Dorm rooms consists of comfortable bunk beds. Each bed has its own reading light and a locker is available for every guest. The rooms are spacious and cleaned every day. Even though the hostel is located next to a main road, noise from outside will not disturb your sleep. There are many bathrooms at the hostel and it is unlikely that you need to queue at any time of the day. The bathrooms are outside the bedrooms and spread over the hostel.

Common Spaces

Zebra Crossing Lodge has plenty of communal spaces. There is a lounge inside with couches and a TV where you can relax, a nice big seating area outside, a cafe where you can order drinks and some light food, and a kitchen where you can store and prepare your own food. There is also a reception where you can book activities and get your laundry done for a fee. Zebra Crossing Lodge is a social hostel with a pleasant vibe and it is easy to meet fellow travellers. It is a quieter hostel than those on Long Street and you can find travellers of all ages in this hostel, whereas guests in hostels on Long Street tend to be much younger.

Zebra Crossing Lodge is a pleasant hostel in Cape Town's city centre. It is a social hostel and offers a great value for money. Zebra Crossing is well located, comfortable and safe.

Good time

The staff were very helpful, and the place itself has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The location is very good.

This hostel is lovely. Stayed here two weeks, felt right at home. Staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for you. It was quiet enough to sleep but also had a friendly vibe and you could enjoy yourselves there. It's a bargain one of the cheapest hostels we found, very clean and couldn't ask for more. There's a room with a TV and books, and a little cafe and bar. Fab atmosphere, really chilled, and met some wonderful people.

I was at Zebra for more than two months, and I can say that if you really are looking for a place where you can meet nice people and want to taste a bit of the relaxed and cool atmosphere in Cape Town, Zebra is the place to be! Definitely coming back next time!

Great place!

I stayed here from June to August 2007 and thought that it was a great hostel in an excellent location. The staff (Susan and Krizaan) are friendly and helpful and owner Darryl is also very nice. I would recommend the hostel also because it is quiet, has some great views of Table Mountain, and I met many interesting travelers during my time there.

Absolute top banana

I stayed there christmas week 2007. Susan is an absolute darling -- she took real good care of me and my visiting friends throughout my stay and all the people there made me feel really welcome. there's also Bromywm cafe and she makes a mean fried egg butty on your return from long street night out. i would never stay anywhere else when i return to cape town.

Clean, secure, and friendly

Thumbs up Zebra Crossing. The place is clean and comfortable and the staff friendly and efficient. Security is excellent, better than most other places I've stayed at in South Africa. Good value for money.

Zebra Crossing is a great place to stay. There is nothing wrong with security, it is clean, and the staff are great! There are many other hostels/guesthouses in the same area surrounded by the same streets. Crime happens all over the place. If you are looking for a five-star hotel, go check into one. But don't expect the same reasonable rates. I have already booked my stay for next year at ZC. I recommend it to all!

Very poor security

This is a nice hostel, but the security at the place is a joke. I stayed there four days and found the front gate open four different times, someone had a cell phone stolen out of a locked private room, and two cars were broken into in their parking lot. It's a real shame too -- the hostel itself is nice, but their lack of attention to security makes this a poor choice for Cape Town.

Clean, quiet and friendly, Zebra Crossing is situated at the foot of Table Mountain in close vicinity to cafe's, cinemas, supermarkets and museums. Centrally located just up from trendy Kloof Street, 5 minutes walk from vibrant Long Street, 5 minutes by taxi from the Waterfront and Table Mountain Cableway and within easy reach of Cape Town's famous beaches.

Family friendly, we are considered to be one of the quieter hostels in Cape Town. Some of the rooms have good views of Table Mountain and facilities include leafy garden and courtyards with barbeque, fully equipped kitchen, Cafe' with internet access and the Blue Skies Travel Center for all travel arrangements. We provide comprehensive information, arrange airport transfers, inexpensive car hire and tours.

Established in 1993 Zebra Crossing is listed in various travel guides including Rough Guide and South African Handbook. Footprints South Africa list us in their top ten and 'Lets Go Recommends'.
Lonely Planet (2000 edition) say "A good piano and a good atmosphere. It's one of our favourites"
