HI - Mechelen - De Zandpoort Hostel Reviews

A jewel among the Flemish cities

Coming by train from Brussels (south) or from Antwerp (north) you will find, between these two important Belgian cities, the interesting and picturesque city of Mechelen. The imposing gothic tower of Saint Rumbold`s Cathedral, which is 97 meters high and one of the most beautiful in all Flanders, will welcome you already from afar. Who would have thought that this little city, which has approximately 78,000 inhabitants, had been the capital of the Lower Countries during a part of the XVI century, a cultural and political centre at the beginning of the Renaissance and where the emperor Charles V (I from Spain) was educated in his youth. Today it is the ecclesiastical capital of Belgium and moreover the city of the carillons, the tapestry and the curious Toy Museum.

In the Grote Markt or Big Square you will find a vast number of historical buildings with sumptuous facades. It is dominated by the statue of Margaret of Austria who had governed the city during the Burgundian period. The most important building is, without doubt, the Town Hall which is situated in the former Cloths Hall. Very close you will find Saint Rumbold’s Cathedral with its imposing tower which has its two famous carillons, each with 49 bells. Mechelen is particularly famous because of the Royal Carillon School in the Hof van Busleyden and many performers of carillon from the whole world have learnt the secrets of this hard job here.

The city owes its international fame to the art of tapestry manufacture. In the De Wit tapestry factory you will find the clue to this. Countless works of art throughout the centuries have given fame to the Flemish upholsterers. Nowadays the factory makes honour to the tradition, weaving new pieces of tapestry and restoring the oldest ones.

Other places of interest in Mechelen are the church of Saints Peter and Paul which is an old Jesuit church right next to the former palace of Margaret of York, today housing the municipal theatre, Saint John’s church with stunning Rubens’ paintings and the church of Our Lady across the Dijle. Margaret of Austria’s palace which today houses the city’s law court, the Toy Museum which has a spectacular collection of toys and interactive games, dolls, tin soldiers, trains and much more – children love it and adults are taken back to their childhoods, the Zoo and Technopolis, a hands-on centre for science and technology, where you are strongly encouraged to touch and play with the exhibits, fun for all the family a truly scientific adventure.

Walking around the old part of Mechelen you will be able to go through different centuries and all the architectural styles of the second millennium. A large part of this dates back to half of the XVI century when Mechelen was the capital city of the Burgundian Lower Countries.
As if that was not enough, Mechelen, for centuries the seat of the Belgian archbishops, also has a valuable ecclesiastical heritage which is open to the public all the year which is something exceptional in Flanders.

A city where history is breathed wherever you go, a city perfectly situated between two big cities, just take a train and within 20 minutes you will easily be in Brussels or in Antwerp, what else can a person ask for? Mechelen also has the advantage of being a city with reasonable prices regarding food and drink...

Come and enjoy your stay in this city and this Youth Hostel which will welcome you with open arms.
