Supertramp Hostel is a modern hostel that's bright and vibrant with graffiti and colourful art pieces throughout the building. It's comfortable, clean, and lively.
The Location
It's located close to the train station; on the other side of town if you're walking from Hidro Electrica, it's only a short walk a few blocks uphill to the hostel. A sign reading "Supertramp Hostel" in the typical artistic style of the hostel can be seen from a short distance. Restaurants and small food stores can be found less than a minute from the hostel's doorstep, with markets and more shops -- plus the road to Machu Picchu -- a ten-minute walk away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers eight-, ten-, and twelve-bed dorms and private rooms that sleep up to four. Rooms are clean and large, with sufficient space for each guest and his luggage. Rooms include lockers, windows, bunk beds, and power boards for charging electronics. The power boards aren't near the beds, but there are some beanbags where you can sit near them.
All bathrooms are shared (no rooms come with a private bathroom), and are all for both men and women. Showers sometimes have limited hot water. Bathrooms include several curtained showers and toilets with sinks outside. There's no room to change privately except inside the showers, and nowhere to put clothes. The showers can be cold and low on pressure.
Common Spaces
Downstairs in the reception area there are several bean bags, a complimentary tea and coffee table, and a computer for guests to use. The restaurant (closed during time of reviewing) is also located on the bottom floor, and it's where free breakfast is served. It is served very early so you can start your walk or bus ride for Machu Picchu on a full stomach. There are several wooden benches and tables where you can sit. On each floor there are extra bean bags placed conveniently next to power outlets to sit with electronics whilst on charge. Upstairs is a bar, which serves food and drinks, and consisting of bean bags, tables, and chairs. The atmosphere is lively enough, but as everyone's only staying one night and leaving early the next morning, you can't expect a party.
Summary
This is a nice hostel with a good atmosphere where you can rest up for your trip to Machu Picchu. The hostel's convenient breakfast times and the availability of baggage storage make your visit to the ruins that little bit easier.
