Melaleuca Surfside Backpackers Reviews

I stayed here for a few nights; the owners were lovely and really helpful. It's set in a lush place with a one-mile beach 50 m away and we went sand boarding here, too. Definitely recommend it.

Awesome place and awesome people, including pets, run it! No hesitation in recommending this hostel. Very close to nature vibe but with comforts and convenience. A real gem.

I felt unsafe about the standard of cleanliness in the shower.

I had to clean the table and chairs on the balcony off the private cabin we hired.

The lighting in the cabin was glummy and did not allow me to read in bed in the evening.

Excellent Hostel, would definitely recommend for a chill weekend! Not much to do around the area in terms of partying, but it is beautiful for hiking and surfing. The hostel has a couple of baby kangaroos hopping around and they're really friendly. Only downside as a solo traveler is that it was quite quiet and not easy to actually meet people (had a few nice conversations but since there's not much to do I didn't really properly meet anyone). 100% would return to this hostel.

Liked: Wonderful staff, heaps of wildlife. Didn't like: Hardly any phone signal and wifi is only in the common room. But this wouldn't stop me staying there again.

There were lots of animals on site, and the feel was very open air and natural.

Liked: Location between trees and flowers! Kangaroo that lives in the big garden. You can reach the beach in a 5 minutes walk. Didn't like: You need a car to get some food or to visit the town and get to the restaurants.

Liked: close to surfing beach Didn't like: was not told the double cabin did not have running water or no toilet and chickens would be under the cabin all night

Liked: There were so many animals to see on the property! They even have a pet kangaroo that lives there. She was fun to play with and pet. You literally live in the woods. The common area and kitchen are wonderful. The staff was fantastic. They even gave me a lift to Nelson Bay! Didn't like: It was very cold in the room, even with the space heater on. I went in mid-july so I shouldn't complain. I survived. The bathrooms are enclosed, but still cold so it gets a bit nippy. Other than it being cold, everything else was great.
