Hostal Antigua

The Review

Hostal Antigua is a tranquil, clean, professional hostel located in central Antigua. Though the hostel doesn't include a complimentary breakfast like many other hostels in Antigua, it is still extremely good value for money, with free purified drinking water, communal kitchen, terrace and a hotel-like professional feel. If you have been missing the small luxuries in life, such as hot showers, comfortable beds, clean rooms, and a good night's sleep, then this hostel is worth spending a few nights to unwind before hitting the road again.

The Location
Hostal Antigua is located only one block from Parque Central (central park) in a safe barrio (neighbourhood) in Antigua. The hostel is only a ten-minute walk from the main bus terminal, as well as being a couple of minutes walking distance to several mercados (markets) a few supermarkets, many museums, church ruins, Spanish schools, bars, and restaurants.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are private and dorm rooms available. The dorm room is a twelve-bed dorm, with ample space for your luggage; it also includes large individual lockers for your valuables; fans; TV; and 2 bathrooms with shower, sink, and toilet. The showers are modern, with hot water, and include proper shower heads (not the electric shower heads that you get in most of Latin America, with wires jutting out everywhere, and which often shock you when changing the temperature). The hostel also provides soap and a towel for use. The biggest draw for this hostel are the beds which have proper mattresses, which are comfortable, clean, and of a good size. There is also good Wi-Fi available in the dorm room, as well as in the other communal parts of the hostel.

Common Spaces

There is a fully equipped, communal kitchen located on the second floor next to the terrace. There is also plenty of tables and chairs in the patio area on the first floor, as well as on the terrace. All communal areas are well maintained and clean and have Wi-Fi access. This is definitely not a party hostel, or very busy, however it is still a hostel where you are likely to meet other friendly travelers.

Hostal Antigua is a great place to unwind, recoup, and catch up on sleep. If you are looking for a party scene, this is not the place, however you will still have the opportunity to meet other travelers. The hostel staff are happy to provide maps and information about Antigua and other activities in Guatemala, however no social activities are organised directly by the hostel, unlike many of the other hostels in Antigua. Overall Hostal Antigua exceeded our expectations, providing us with first class service and accommodation for a budget price.

Unpleasant hostel
First things first -- the dorms have no supporting furniture whatsoever, just the tiny locker... there is no space for nothing, all is crammed. we are talking about twelve persons and all their personal belongings. A mess. The bathroom is cleaned once a day, not enough, again, when we are talking about 12 persons using it ... when I arrived, just before cleaning, the rubbish bin was full -- not a nice thing to see or smell -- and on top of that there was no toilet paper (fortunately I noticed that in advance). Common space is limited to a sterile rooftop with three tables and two sunbeds. Kitchen is also in the rooftop. Now imagine it's raining or windy and cold ... no place to be except in the awfully crowded and messy dorm. And access to the kitchen will be for the braves only. Staff was cold and totally unable of a smile. Fortunately I had a booking for single night. A place which I can't recommend at all. The only positive thing is the location, which couldn't be any better.
Too expensive for what you get
Antigua is one of the greatest towns in Central America. It has lots of charm, is not too expansive and has lots to offer. Also a lot of choice regarding hostels. 37.5USD is way too much for a double room without breakfast. Even with breakfast in Antigua it is too much. $25-$30 is more realistic for a nice place. So clearly they need to do an upgrade or you should choose another place.

Very clean and well managed comfortable hostel. Good beds, very big lockers for your luggage, nice roof terrace and kitchen. This is a place for chilling out, party hostels are somewhere else. Excellent location in the city center.

Great Location, Staff, & Rooftop
Hostal Antigua was wonderful. The staff are very sweet and informative with what you may need. Free coffee is offered all day long and the rooftop is a great place to meet other travelers and where the kitchen is located. The hostal is in a central location but they do close the door at night so people can enjoy a good night's rest. Everything is clean and neat and I would definitely stay here again! Thank you to the staff for holding my things on my behalf as I traveled for a day and making my stay in Guate fabulous!
