Sultan Hostel & Guesthouse Reviews

Sultan Hostel&Guesthouse is one of the cheapest hostels available in Sultanahmet area. The hostel is run by a team of locals who speak good English and are more than helpful in providing tourist information about the various tourist attractions in the area.

The Location

The hostel is located merely ten minutes' walk away from major attractions in Istanbul such as the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. There are numerous bars and restaurants in the hostel's vicinity, so it can get rather noisy at night. The hostel itself also runs a restaurant right outside the hostel, which plays loud music well into the night. Fortunately, the soundproofing in bedrooms is good, so guests are unaffected by the noise.

Guests coming from Taksim or Esenler bus station can take the metro and transfer to a tram. The nearest tram station to the hostel is at the Sultanahmet station.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are crowded and packed with only a single walkway in the room. Beds are old and in poor condition. No lockers are provided. The ceiling of some of the rooms are leaking and the water will splash onto the beds of certain guests. Rooms are cold during the winter as there is no proper heating system. However, thick blankets are provided to make up for this.

The walkways between rooms are narrow and always congested due to the large number of guests staying in the hostel, making it uncomfortable to walk through.

Bathrooms are dirty and small. There are too many guests and too few cubicles, so guests have to constantly queue up at the bathrooms and toilets. No towels or showering gel are provided.

Common Spaces

The hostel has a small internet room with a row of wall-facing seats. This is the only "lounge" available in the hostel, especially at night. In the morning, the hostel's restaurant serves breakfast to all guests, so guests can choose to hang out there instead. Breakfast were served on a buffet basis with free-flow cheese, bread, and jam.

Sultan Hostel&Guesthouse is a great budget option for travelers who plan to visit the various historical attractions in the area. However, the hostel is a little bit overcrowded and facilities are poor, so guests who prefer more comfort may wish to consider other hostels in the same area.

Excellent Location, Quality Rooms, (some) Dismissive Staff

I thoroughly enjoyed this hostel. My dorm room had 10 beds with a private bathroom. The shower was very roomy. The restaurant was good, but nothing special. The guys at the front desk were never very nice, but they weren't particularly rude. A five minute walk from the hostel is the Ayasofya, Blue Mosque, and Basilica Cistern, so the location cannot be beat!

The hostel is efficient and affordable. The location is great and the staff are amazing. The Wi-Fi works perfectly, but the showers not so much. I recommend waiting at least an hour to shower after someone.

Location, Location, Location -- HI - Sultan Hostel is in the best location imaginable for exploring all of the main tourist sights of Istanbul. Unfortunately, this is about the only thing it has going for it.

The Location

The hostel is situated about two minutes' walking distance from the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia, the main Istanbul tourist attractions. The easiest way to get to the hostel from the bus station or the airport, is to catch the Metro to the station Aksaray. It is then about a ten-minute walk from the Metro Station to the tram stop, situated on the main road. Take the tram in the direction of the city, to the station Sultanahmet. It is approximately five minutes' walk from this station to the hostel. The hostel is situated in amongst a number of other hostels, hotels, mini markets, restaurants, and bars. The nightlife in this location is also very good.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This is where things take a downward slide. The hostel offers dorm rooms and private room accommodation; your experience at this hostel will depend on whether you have a room on the bottom floor, or one of the other floors. The rooms on the bottom floor are well in need of renovation, with old and dirty facilities. If you have a room on the bottom floor there is the added concern of security. As the hostel is on a main road, strangers could reach into the windows and take things off the bed or bedside table. It also means that the noise from the street and neighbouring restaurants and bars is very loud, making it difficult to sleep. There is only one key to each dorm room, which is kept by the reception. The rooms on the upper floors are more modern with the facilities of a better standard, but there is no lift so you will enjoy hauling your luggage up the many steps.

The dorm-style accommodation is basic -- it's essentially just a bed. There are no power outlets, individual reading lights, or lockers in the rooms. There are free lockers outside the rooms. As this hostel is very busy, additional beds are often put on the floor, making for cramped living conditions.

Some of the rooms have a bathroom en suite with a toilet and shower. There is no screen or shower curtain separating the toilet and the shower. This means that water runs over everything, including the toilet and all of your belongings. There are no hooks or seats for clothing or toiletries. The bathrooms are of a very poor standard.

Common Spaces

There really are no common spaces in the hostel. The hostel has a bar and restaurant area, which is open to the public. There are a number of computers for communal use, and Wi-Fi is available at some areas of the hostel. There is no kitchen. Breakfast is basic but included in the price of the accommodation. The lack of common area unfortunately means that the atmosphere is lacking. It is a place where people really come and go and not spend any extended period of time.

This is an average hostel needing a lot of TLC, but it's ok if you are just after a bed for the night.

Great stay for a great price

Great location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Two PCs with free internet, free wi-fi and safes at your disposal. We stayed there for 4 nights in a double bed room. The room was clean but small (bed pushed up against the wall) with a small bathroom. The shower is not practical, there is just a shower head and a hole on the floor. The entire bathroom becomes quickly flooded and slippery, so watch out, fortunately it is cleaned everyday. Quiet hostel with a coffee-restaurant annexe. Good breakfast.

Just Perfect.

This hostel was amazing. The staff is helpful and so friendly. The rooms are clean.

Very very very nice....

at first i have to say my very good words for the guys that work over there!they are very kind and helpful and enjoyable! we also slept in a 25 beds dorm (beforehand a disco!) and it was really quiet for 25 people in there, no smells, and the bathrooms were as clean as they could. a very good and cheap solution with a nice view from the rooftop and a very enjoyable atmosphere!! keep it like that!!

We stayed here for 4 nights in a 20 bed dorm. The room was quiet and comfortable, bathrooms are clean and you can hang outside in the cafe area.

The only bad thing was there was no water on the day we arrived and no hot water the second day...and we booked online using hostel world which quoted a different price to what the people at reception said. So better to turn up or telephone them instead! Apart from that not a bad place to stay!
