Flying Dog Hostel Iquitos Reviews

Flying Dog Hostel Iquitos is a huge, open, and airy hostel in central Iquitos. The hostel has a welcoming and friendly vibe, which is apparent as soon as you arrive.

The Location

Flying Dog has a great location opposite the River Amazon, so there are amazing views, especially at sunrise/sunset. Belen Market is five minutes' walk away, along one road. And the main street is a couple of blocks behind the hostel. The hostel is easy to get to from the boat port, due to the small size of the town. The hostel is close to shops, laundry, Belen Market, floating town, restaurants, and pretty much everything you'll need. We were warned by the hostel staff to not carry a handbag, as this could attract unwanted attention/thieves, especially at Belen Market and at night.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are fairly spacious with a ceiling or floor fan, lockers for each bed, and a bit of room on the floor for your things. The beds are large and comfy. You can hire a towel from reception. With the dorm rooms you aren't given a key, as it's kept at reception in case one of your roommates locks the door! There are six- and eight-bed dorms, all with shared bathrooms. There are also private room options. The bathrooms are clean and basic. The shower cubicle has a little stool for your things and a small area to change. The water is cold -- which isn't so bad, as the weather is hot and humid!

Common Spaces

The hostel has a large kitchen with basic utensils for cooking your own meals, but no communal salt, pepper, or oil. There is filtered water in the kitchen for drinking, but this did run out when we stayed there! Breakfast is included in the room rate, which is good. The breakfast isn't too bad either -- it's eggs and bread and jam with tea or coffee -- and one of the staff members cooks it for you! There are a few sofas in the large reception area with cable TV. There is also a small bar next to the kitchen, which is great for chatting with other people from the hostel. But it is right by some of the dorm rooms and can be annoying if you can't sleep with noise!

Flying Dog is a great hostel for exploring the town and nearby market. The staff are very friendly and helpful and take pleasure in getting to know you and learning your name! They are also very knowledgeable about the local area, things to do, and onward travel. The hostel makes a great base for a few days exploring Iquitos.

Flying Dog Hostel Iquitos Reviews from the Web

The hostel is in a great location! You can book amazon jungle tours there (much more cheaper than online) and meet all the traveller pit stopping for the amazon. The only 2 problems is that the wifi is super bad and the water in the toilets sometimes doesnt flush (lack of water). But id recommend is as a pit stop for a couple of days.

Staff very nice, know how to source the goodies

Great location and friendly staff - facilities were dated but was okay. Great atmosphere

positive: inexpensive, cute atomosphere, kitchen, and the walk to plaza de armas/malecn de maldonado felt safe at night for a solo female traveler

negative: i was in a room with a window next to the road and it was INCREDIBLY loud by 7am. almost loud enough to hurt your ears. next time- i would ask for a room without a window.

Comfortable hostel in a safe part of Iquitos. It has a friendly atmosphere and is helpful with organising jungle tours when you arrive.

Simple yet comfy hostel perfectly located on the Boulevard and close to Belen market. Its nothing really special and the wifi isnt great, but that seemed pretty standard for Iquitos. Overall great experience and would stay here again

WiFi is not the best and the room I was in definitely needs fixing. Broken windows made the outside noise louder and thus harder to sleep. Yet, a nice hostel with friendly and helpful staff.

I had a great time in the hostel and thanks to the help of Marcel I found a nice Tour to the jungle! Thank you :) Unfortunately the windows in the Bedroom were broken so it was very loud at night and not all the wardrobes could be closed with a lock. Also the staff members gave me different information about my reservation and other questions so you get a little confused. Besides that the hostel is great to meet people and has a good price/performance ratio

really kind people here. WiFi in Iquitos is horrific, basically unusable. Not the hostel's faults, just an unfortunate side effect of the city. Not good for Digital Nomads. Shower's water pressure was also non existent, but was at least very hot. Great staff. location was very good too, minutes away from the market, ATM machine, and good restaurants.

constant dripping leak in the bathroom (flooded at one point, made access to our room difficult), often no toilet paper, no warm water (even though advertised), no protection against mosquitos (broken mesh/windows dont close properly), bedroom door didnt close therefore doesnt lock, grumpy person who made (free) breakfast (same every day), sheets not changed every 3 days as advertised, free wifi but only works in reception, no air con, fan in room (didnt reach our beds) then stopped working.

The room wasn't clean at all, the shower didn't work

Stains on the bed sheets. Bathroom not cleaned. Towels give to us clearly looked like towels used at home. Spider webs in bathroom and room.

We left for one full day. Our beds were made. First time that has happened in a hostel. And without permission.

This was a beautiful hostel in a nice area of Iquitos. I highly recommend it. Probably the nicest hostel I've stayed in and the staff was very friendly.

Location is amazing!

Liked: Cheap, common area was comfortable, breakfast was good - eggs and whole wheat toast with juice! Didn't like: Our biggest problem with the hostel was we were constantly accosted by men offering tours in the lobby of the hostel. It makes sense for the hostel to have a relationship with a tour company, but when we were sitting and relaxing in the common area it was pretty annoying to be constantly solicited for a tour. The bathrooms didn't get a thorough cleaning. The sinks and floors were always dirty, and there was trash in the shower our whole stay. The hostel also has a problem with ants - they were in our room and infested one of our smaller bags when we left our things in storage. The Internet was also painfully slow, but honestly I think that's very common in this part of Peru.

Liked: Within walking distance to everything. Breakfast is good. Most staff are friendly. Good showers when they arent clogged. Didn't like: There are miniscule ants EVERYWHERE. They are in the kitchen, rooms, bathrooms. I dont think there is much that can really be done about it but just be prepared.. You are backpacking so this shouldnt phase you too badly. Be careful with the staff.. They are extremely friendly but can be deceitful. If you go out to the bars with them, make sure you know how to find your way back to the hostel should you lose them.

Staff were awesome., location great and plenty of advice for whatever reason you're in town.

Liked: Good location, great advice for whatever brings you to Iquitos Didn't like: WiFi barely worked.

Liked: Really cool staff, organised to go to monkey island and the butterfly sanctuary for me which was awesome. Pretty cool people there too Didn't like: Showers v cold.

Liked: kind and friendly staff. basic kitchen to cook in. Didn't like: free wifi was tempermental, yet free. ground floor room right next to the communal area with smoking was unplesant. super hot rooms, super hot area though.
