Cabañas Balamjuyuc Mazunte Ecohostel Reviews

Cabanas Balamjuyuc Mazunte Hostel is arranged similarly to a campsite and includes private cabanas, shared facilities, and a couple rows of small tents. Described by the owner as “socialistic,” the hostel maintains an open, communal vibe. The accommodations are reasonably priced and located on the hillside only a few minutes walk from the beach.

The Location

There are no signs providing any kind of direction to the hostel. While most accommodations are located on the main street that leads into the beach, Cabanas Balamjuyuc is a bit more of a (uphill) walk. From the main street at the town’s entrance, take the road that turns right, up the mountainside. Continue along this road, which transitions into a dirt path. After about a five minute walk on the dirt, a cemetery will appear on the left. A few paces beyond the cemetery, take the path to the left towards the buildings above. Balamjuyuc is just beyond.

Away from the main part of the village, the location is quite tranquil, offering a supreme view of the ocean below. The beach is a short walk down a set of stairs located in the middle of the hostel’s site. Though it is a bit out of the way, the town center is still no more than a 15 minute walk.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Cabanas Balamjuyuc offers both private rooms and single bed tents. The private rooms (cabanas) are basic but quaint, each offering an unexpectedly comfortable bed, fan, night table, mosquito net, and lock for the large, barn-like doors. Outside every cabana is a prime lounging area with hammock and chairs. Next to the cabanas are a couple rows of small tents, each featuring a mattress and pillow.

Bathrooms are shared, and the hostel offers four separate toilets in the middle of the park as well as four showers (cool water only). Only two sinks exist in the bathroom area. Even so, it’s unlikely this will prove to be a problem unless the hostel is completely full of visitors.

The hostel’s land is fairly well maintained, and the rooms are clean and tidy. The toilets are also quite inviting and smell better than they ought to. The sinks and shower areas are not spotless, but not filthy either.

While the cabanas do lock, there are no on-site lockers. If you are staying in a tent, you will have to be somewhat trusting, or find a way to lock your tent.

Common Spaces

There is really only one common area at Cabanas Balamjuyuc, which acts as a reception, kitchen, and dining area in one. The space is open to the air and elements, meaning that the kitchen attracts a lot of flies. Despite this, the space is fairly well kept. There is a fridge to store food and from which guests can purchase beer or kombucha. Purified water is available by donation, and a gas stove can be used to cook food.

The dining area is made up of two benches and a hammock. A power bar is nearby for charging devices. Finally, there is a desktop computer available to use. Do note, this common area is the only space where Wi-Fi works consistently.

Cabanas Balamjuyuc Hostel is a simple and affordable accommodation option in Mazunte. A bit of a walk from the town center, the site offers tranquility, a gorgeous view, and easy access to the beachfront. The private cabanas are basic yet sufficient, and campsite tents are available for those who prefer to sleep outdoors (or are on a tighter budget). The facilities are kept tidy but are not immaculate. Though a bit rough around the edges, Cabanas Balamjuyuc is ideal for a peaceful stay on a budget.

Cabañas Balamjuyuc Mazunte Ecohostel Reviews from the Web

Hostel located almost at the top of a hill so the views are amazing (the walk to get there isn't so amazing). It is a rustic hostel so only stay here if you're really into nature. When I arrived I wasn't informed of any of the facilities of the hostel (wifi, bathrooms, kitchen etc) and the check in/out is a little disorganized. Nice experience after all.

Really lovely people, really lovely views, super chill vibes, very calm and quiet. Definitely staying here if im in mazunte again

Great location, great place, we ended up staying longer than expected since it was way too relaxing.

Its in a lovely setting and Mazunte is so special. The 4 bed room was extremely basic and we did appreciate the rural nature of it, However our check in was a bit disorganised and we were asked almost every day we were there whether wed paid and how many nights we were staying. It just felt a bit disorganised. Shame as its a very nice place. Id advise staying in the nicer two bed room rather than the bigger ones that are more basic.

Really rustic hostel, feels more like a camping experience with dorms instead of tents - prob not for everyone, but I liked it (though there were tons of cool people staying when I was there). There is a communal kitchen you can cook in and an outdoor grill. Great view of the water, you cant see the sunset but it's on the way to Punta Cometa which has the best view in the whole town. All the beds and stuff have fly nets so it's not bad at night. Super nice and cool staff that we hung out with

The staff was so nice. Emiliano know so much about not only Mazunte, but the nearby towns. He gave me great recommendations for many wonderful meals. He also helped me a lot while I was there, including showing me how to use aloe vera as a plant and calling for a taxi for me to make sure Id have transportation the day I left. All of this even though they had just suffered some damage from a hurricane. I definitely intend to go back and stay at Cabaas Balamjuyuc.

Emiliano is the best host you could possibly hoped for, the view is amazing and if you are looking for a chill hostel in nature, this is the place. I will definitely come back there next time Im in mazunte :)

Very idyllic place with a great view. Unfortunately, there were no facilities for cooking, or food to buy in their 'cafe' as described, which made our stay there difficult. The owner seemed nice but the rest of the staff was very rude.

Awesome stay! Great vibes and just super chill. No lockers available but everyone was comfortable leaving things out. I had no issues with security. Checking in and checking out is pretty informal. The hostel has great views, great vibes, and good people. Enjoyed my stay.

The location and the view are amazing, on top of the hill overlooking the beach. We stayed in a cute cabana, no real doors or windows but added to the charm. The only complaint is that there the no lockers but you can leave any belonging in the house of the owners. Also some of the mosquito nets had wholes which was not great.

Not recommended at all: the view is really amazing, but unfortunately the organization is very bad and the owner/manager is totally unreliable. Be careful in relying on your reservation, because when we arrived not all the rooms we booked were available, and a part of our group had to search for another accommodation for the same night. Moreover, the owner, after making a scene and being unreasonable, overcharged us.

The kind of place you wished you could stay longer. Yes, it's rustic but you knew that when you booked it, right? Incredible view and location; we're lucky places like this still exist.

Nice place, chill. Accomodation is on the top of the hill with good view. Rooms are good equipmented for mosqitos ,so no problem with that at all. If you want, you can train there also, eat some meal or do temazcal. And the owner is great guy

Scrumptious views perched amidst the trees above Mazunte beach with stellar sunrises viewable from your hut. This place is truly 'back to basics.' Bathrooms were clean, although perpetually wet (floors +counters). The big bummer for us was we had bed bug bites throughout our stay. When we brought this up to the host, it was brushed off as if inconsequential, and they didn't even inspect our room. Breakfast was nice. Overall cleanliness could be improved, otherwise a good place to find solace!

This Hostal is killer! So cool to be nestled into the side of the hill over looking the ocean. It is very quiet and peaceful with good breakfast and helpful staff

very beautiful views with horrible service, and horrible amenities. The most incompetently managed hostel Ive ever been to. We booked 3 rooms several days in advance and upon arrival were told that they only had 1. The women working said she was doing us a favor because we could all stay together and save money but the room slept two maximum. She also overcharged us for the room and when I asked for some money back bc of the deposit I already paid she gave me 200 pesos back and said to stfu

Not for the fainted hearts. The place is very basic. The views amazing. If you are super chill and don't care about anything this is your place. Wasn't mine tho. But the host was super friendly.

The view is amazing but service is very bad. When I came, the manager did not even greet me, they showed me the room and that's it! The manager is there to take money, she didn't even say hi to me when I say hi to her. Very rude. She told me to pay the room including the deposit from hostel world but I said no, I only gonna pay the remaining. Be careful, they said it's full capacity so they can charge more!

The view was very beautiful and the location was very close to the town and beaches but the pool had no water in it and in the dorm room there was only 2 fans between 5 beds so it was very hot at night. Even though it says towels included, the staff were reluctant to give them to us because we were staying in dorm and when we wanted them to replace the drinking water we had to ask several times.

The view was amazing and the place was very relaxing and nice. However, the pool had no water in it so was not useable and in the dorm there were only 2 fans between 5 beds so it got very hot at night.
